Cris Carter’s son Duran could soon be a Minnesota Viking.

According to the Star Tribune, Duran has been invited to tryout at the Viking’s rookie minicamp this weekend. It was initially reported that Duran was set to sign with the Vikings but Carter confirmed today that his son wasn’t quite ready to sign with the team.

Carter said: “I’m just so happy for him that he’ll get an opportunity to continue doing what he loves to do … For him to get that opportunity with the Minnesota Vikings, a team I played for and love, it’s just a blessing.”

Duron hasn’t had much of a football career to this point. He played for Ohio State in 2009 but left the school after he became ineligible due to academics. He played at Coffeyville Community College in Kansas in 2010 but didn’t play the following two years when he attended Alabama and Florida Atlantic.

Still, he’s Cris Carter’s son and that has to count for something.

Carter, who was recently inducted into the NFL Hall of Fame, said that his son could be a quality NFL reciever.

Carter said: “Very few have taken the route to the NFL that he’s taken. Minnesota presents the best opportunity for him … Very few have taken the route to the NFL that he’s taken. Good speed and his route running is probably his strength. …Rumor has it his hands are good … I know there aren’t a lot of better receivers than him in this draft.”

Cayden Chochran, who threw passes to Duron in Coffeyville, said:  “(Duron Carter is) the most lazy, whiny & non-work ethic player the nfl has ever seen … Horrible person & will be a complete cancer to any team on the board.”

In the past decade markedly, Americans have begun identifying less frequently as religious — but belief in God has, in one study, shown to be beneficial in the treatment of mental illness.

As the number of atheists increases per capita, the new study reveals faith may be a useful factor in treating mental illnesses.

The study, conducted at McLean Hospital in Belmont, Massachusetts, involved 159 patients at the Behavioral Health Partial Hospital and was published in Journal of Affective Disorders.

David Rosmarin is a clinician and instructor in the department of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School in Boston, and he explained that the patients in the study — whose stays in the facility lasted approximately two weeks — seemed to show different outcomes depending on whether they had faith in God.

Rosmarin explains:

“We found that patients who had higher levels of belief in God had better treatment outcomes — better well-being, less depression and less anxiety … Belief in God can facilitate belief in treatment … People who had more faith also had more faith in treatment. They thought it was credible and were optimistic about treatment. They believed it was going to help them.”

Patients who participated in the study were told to use a five point scale to determine both their faith in God and spiritual affiliations as well as their expectations as far as the efficacy of treatment. Researchers then weighed the results against their levels of anxiety, self-harm and depression at the end of their treatment — noting a difference between the believers and non-believers.

Interesting, patients who said their belief in God was more than “slight” were twice as likely to respond positively to their therapies, Rosmarin said, though he noted it was not clear why this was the case.

Christina Puchalski, founder and executive director of the George Washington Institute for Spirituality and Health in Washington, D.C., was not involved in the study, but spoke to LiveScience about its outcome:

“If people are able to see something outside of themselves, they tend to do better in general, so that’s not surprising … From my own clinical practice, I certainly see that if people are able to have some sense of transcendence, they often have better responses.”

Puchalski continues:

“Spirituality can be broadly defined … It’s not just religion, or a belief in a higher power. The ability to connect to something outside of oneself — things like hope and being hopeful, or having a sense of coherence — it’s all part of spirituality.”

Rosmarin says the area of belief in God and mental illness requires more study, adding:

“It’s embarrassing that there’s such a disparity between what we know about patient spirituality, and how to handle it … It’s an area that’s relevant to us as a people, but we have no clue what to do about it.”

Carlos Ruiz has been waiting longer than most for his first at-bat of the 2013 Major League Baseball season. The reason the Philadelphia Phillies catcher has been waiting so long is because he had to sit out the first 25 games of the seasons thanks to a positive test for banned substances.

The former All-Star fell victim to the strengthened punishment of offenders who are using any drugs that are considered even remotely useful for enhancing performance on the baseball field. The catcher returned to the field for the first time this season on Sunday.

In that return, the backstop went just 1-4 with a single but the team beat the New York Mets 5-1. There’s nothing to say that his return is the reason his team won their contest but it does mean that a catcher who posted career numbers is finally back and can put the suspension behind him.

Carlos Ruiz is more than willing to simply put the issue behind him. ”I was real happy on the way,” he said. ”It was a nice feeling that everything was over.” The Phillies were just 11-14 in the absence of the man who most teammates affectionately refer to as “Chooch.”

The suspension was announced on November 27, after a second test revealed that he had Adderall in his system. A first positive test merely means that the player must test again. A second test results in a suspension.

After testing positive, Chooch apologized to his teammates and fans and issued another apology during spring training this year. Despite appearing sincerely regretful the Philadelphia Phillie didn’t want to talk about the suspension saying only “”I don’t know, man. I don’t have anything to say about that.”

In preparation for his first big league game since Spring Training the fan favorite played in four minor league rehab games.

Jake Gyllenhaal is set to star in the upcoming crime thriller Nightcrawler.

Before you get your hopes up, let me just say that this movie has absolutely nothing to do with the X-Men character of the same name. Although seeing the character reconstructed as a Los Angeles crime reporter would be interesting, it certainly isn’t happening here.

Screenwriter Dan Gilroy will make his directorial debut with Nightcrawler. He recently co-write the script with his brother Tony Gilroy. Rene Russo, Dan’s wife, will co-star in the feature.

Jake Gyllenhaal will star as a young journalist who finds himself twisted up in the world of freelance journalism in Los Angeles. Considering Nightcrawler is being billed as a thriller, one has to assume that something terrible happens along the way.

Filming on the project is scheduled to begin this October. Producers are hoping to find a buyer for the flick at this year’s Cannes Film Market. If everything goes swimmingly, then the movie could find its way into theaters next year.

Gyllenhaal hasn’t been on the big screen since the 2012 cop drama End of Watch. However, the actor is looking to change all of that very soon.

The Donnie Darko star recently finished work on acclaimed director David O. Russell’s Nailed. The movie, which also stars Jessica Biel and James Marsden, tells the story of a small town waitress who gets a nail lodged in her skull.

Jake Gyllenhaal is also starring in Denis Villeneuve’s Canadian thriller An Enemy. The movie chronicles a man’s attempt to find his doppleganger after he spots the guy in a movie. Both films are expected to arrive in theaters at some point this year.

Denis Villeneuve also cast the actor in Prisoners alongside Hugh Jackman, Melissa Leo, Maria Bello, Paul Dano, Terrence Howard, and Viola Davis. Filming on the project is currently underway.

Israel responded to rocket fire from the Gaza Strip on Sunday with airstrikes that targeted sites used by Islamic militant group Hamas, which currently rules the Palestinian territory.

The Israeli military announced the airstrike on Sunday explaining that its jets struck “a terrorist weapon storage facility and a Hamas training installation.”

The airstrike was in response to rocket fire from Gaza, which landed in southern Israel on Saturday night. The military also closed a key border crossing with the territory. Gaza health officials assured that no one was hurt in the airstrikes.

While it is still ongoing, rocket fire from Gaza has declined significantly since November when Israel launched a military campaign to halt the attacks. Before then, rockets were being fired from Gaza on an almost daily bases. There were also attacks launched on Israeli villages.

While the attacks have calmed in the months since, they do still happen occasionally. In response to Sunday’s airstrike, Israel’s military said that it “will not tolerate any attempt to harm Israeli civilians” and that it would not allow the situation to return to the same level it was at before the campaign.

Israel holds the Hamas government responsible for all rocket fire from Gaza to the country. After the attack, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced that the perpetrators will “pay a heavy price.” So far, no group has claimed responsibility for the latest rocket fire attack on Israel.

It is possible that the attack on Saturday night was by Salafist Muslims, who has been behind recent attacks in the area, including one where rockets were fired from Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula last month. Hamas considers the shadowy extremist Salafists a threat to its rule. The government routinely arrests members of the group in Gaza.

Along with the airstrikes on Sunday morning, Israel responded to the rockets fired from Gaza by closing the Kerem Shalom crossing between Israel and Gaza. The government added that another terminal will be open for humanitarian cases.

Producer Kathleen Kennedy says it will be very difficult to keep details regarding Star Wars: Episode VII a secret once filming begins.

Fans have been clamoring for more details about the film since it was announced late last year. The veteran producer said that keeping things under wraps will be hard since so much information shows up on the internet these days.

During her chat with the folks at Screen Slam, Kennedy said that dealing with confidentiality will be “fascinating as we move into making the movie.” If director J.J. Abrams wants to keep things a secret, then he’s essentially going to have to work overtime to make that happen.

Kathleen Kennedy explained:

“If we’re shooting anything outside, it’s almost impossible to not have things end up on the internet. So my feeling is, you need to embrace that, especially with the fans around something like ‘Star Wars.’ You need to recognize they’re important to the process and acknowledge there are things you’re gonna want to make sure they get to know. So I think that’s something we’re going to monitor, pay attention to and think differently about.”

J.J. Abrams is notorious for revealing very little information about his projects. Even when he isn’t directing, he doesn’t like details getting out until he wants the public to have it. One look at the secrecy surrounding Star Trek Into Darkness shows how the filmmaker prefers to operate.

Rumors have been swirling about the future of the Star Wars franchise since Disney scooped up Lucasfilm last year for around $4 billion. Although theories surrounding the proposed standalone films are all over the place, Disney has yet to confirm or deny anything.

The only things for certain at this point in time is that Abrams is directing Episode VII and Disney intends to release new films annually for five years starting in 2015.

Electronic Arts is facing a jury trial over the Madden NFL lawsuit that has been launched against them.

The company that was once considered a rising star among the video game world has fallen on the hardest of hard times lately. This jury trial, in which a company that has been viewed as the worst in America will have to win over hearts and minds couldn’t come at a worse time.

The lawsuit was brought against EA by Robin Antonick who was a computer programmer back before Madden was any kind of series at all. Antonick wrote a program for the old Apple II operating system. He was hired by EA in order to work on a program that was simply called “Football.”

A year after coming aboard, the company contracted with John Madden and started raking in the dough with the Madden NFL series. The problems between Antonick and EA arose when the company cut ties with the developer while bringing in hundreds of millions of dollars.

The developer claims that the company is still using aspects of his original design without bothering to pay him royalties for that work. Among the features that the disgruntled worked claims are still in use is the fact that players will automatically tackle the ball carrier if they are close enough to him.

Electronic Arts has countered that concepts like that are no-brainers and therefore they don’t need to be paying him money for the concept. The lawsuit has already gone through some initial vetting by a district court judge.

That judge did throw out parts of the lawsuit but there was still enough left behind that a jury trial was needed. The problem for EA is that a jury trial can go either way for it, partly because a jury can be made up of people who don’t understand the intricacies of video game coding.

Electronic Arts has to step into the great unknown with millions at stake and a run of bad luck to beat the band.

On Real Time With Bill Maher Friday night, host Bill Maher discussed the manhunt for suspected Boston bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev at several points — supporting the decision of agents to question the 19-year-old without Miranda rights initially, but blasting the “police state” illustrated in pictures of the daylong search for the teen and lockdown of Boston and its surrounding areas.

Early in the show, Maher talked about the reasons questioning a suspect without Miranda rights invoked can increase intelligence gleaned for possible future attacks — but the comedian laid into the Boston police for some actions during the unusual event.

Much of Boston and surrounding areas was under a “shelter in place” order during the tense search for the surviving Tsarnaev (brother Tamerlan, 26, was killed in the MIT confrontation that sparked the event), but Dzhokhar Tsarnaev was ultimately located unarmed and bleeding to death in a boat — not by the police and other forces patrolling Boston, but by a homeowner going out for a smoke.

As Maher showed images of the heavy artillery called in to locate Tsarnaev, he criticized the massive response to what was ultimately one man at large in a big city, explaining to his guests:

“This country is becoming a police state, and it is very troubling to me. I want to talk about the police. I want to talk about the police, who I am a supporter of, and of course, obviously, we all are. We would be in big trouble without the police.”

Alongside images of an “urban assault vehicle” used by Boston Police, Maher mused:

“This country is becoming a police state and it is very troubling to me.”

After Tsarnaev was captured in Watertown, it was revealed the Boston bombing suspect was unarmed — and Maher challenged the need to fire the number of bullets fired during the tense situation, calling the actions of Boston Police “unprofessional.”

Hurricane Sandy’s homeless are still feeling the pain six months after the super storm ravaged the East Coast, namely in New York and New Jersey.

Tens of thousands of people are still homeless as they deal with a slow and frustrating recovery from the storm that flooded parts of the subway system and caused billions of dollars in damage.

Housing, business, tourism, and coastal protection also remain major problems as summer vacation —and hurricane season — approaches. New York’s Governor Andrew Cuomo stated on Thursday:

“Some families and some lives have come back together quickly and well, and some people are up and running almost as if nothing ever happened, and for them it’s been fine.”

However, Cuomo added, “Some people are still very much in the midst of recovery. You still have people in hotel rooms, you still have people doubled up, you still have people fighting with insurance companies, and for them it’s been terrible and horrendous.”

Signs of Hurricane Sandy still remain along the coast, including in hardest hit areas like the Jersey Shore. The roller coaster that plunged off a pier in Seaside Heights, New Jersey, is still in the ocean where it finally came to rest. And scores of homes that were destroyed in Mantoloking still look the same as they did when their owners’ came home to survey the damage.

And many businesses affected by the storm have not reopened, while an already tight rental market has grown even tighter. But despite the tens of thousands of homeless from Sandy, the region is springing back to life. Some homes have been demolished and a few have already been reconstructed. The post office in Mantoloking also reopened recently, while the first of 50 demolitions are scheduled to start next week.

Volunteers in Highlands, New Jersey, are also working to rebuild the home of Bromlyn Link, a single mother of a 17-year-old boy. The pair helped as part of the town’s first aid squad, which spent 12 to 14 hours per day helping friends and neighbors forced to live in shelters for weeks after the devastating storm hit.

There is no telling how long it will take for Hurricane Sandy’s homeless to return home, but some have taken words by other hurricane survivors to heart. It will take time, but the key is to remain hopeful that recovery will happen and they will get to go home.

NBA player Patrick Beverley received death threats from an Oklahoma City Thunder ball boy following Russell Westbrook’s injury on Wednesday night.

Westbrook suffered a season ending injury on Wednesday night when Beverley lunged for a steal during the Thunder’s game against the Rockets. Beverley has been criticized by some for making a dangerous play on Westbrook but the NBA player definitely doesn’t deserve death threats.

According to the Houston Chronicle, ball boy Mitchell Brown wrote on Twitter: “Patrick Beverly, I’m coming to kill you.”

Capt. Dexter Nelson, a spokesman for the Oklahoma City Police Department, said that the police were currently investigating the incident.

Thunder spokesperson Matt Tumbleson said: “We do not condone his comments. He works game nights on a voluntary basis. We will handle this matter internally.”

ESPN reports that Brown apologized for the remark, saying that it was “completely inappropriate.”

Brown said: “Yesterday I posted something completely inappropriate and I need to apologize. I was out of line and it will not happen again.”

Brown, who has deleted his account, sent one last tweet to Beverley claiming that his account had been hacked.

Brown wrote: “@patbev21 yesterday someone tweeted on my account making a death threat towards you and it wasn’t me. I apologize.”

It’s unclear if the 17-year-old will face any sort of legal consequences for sending death threats to Beverley. For now, it seems like that matter will be settled within the Thunder organization.

The 82-year-old director and his 47-year-old wife haven’t been photographed together since 2011. These rumors, coupled with reports that the two got into a heated argument at his daughter’s wedding last month, suggest that the couple has separated.

“It would be great to be 105 and still making films,” Eastwood remarked. He added that it might be easier to get his ideas in front of the camera when he’s 105 years old.

“In the early days it was more of a fight. Now, they go, ‘Oh, well, if he’s the old guy.’” he joked.

The NFL is one of the most unlikely tax exempt organizations in all of the United States. Senator Tom Colburn (R-OK) thinks it is high time that the exemption be revoked.

In order to revoke that particular exemption, the United States senator is looking to attach an amendment onto the Marketplace Fairness Act. This bill would place a tax onto web purchases anywhere in the country. Currently every state has a different rule about whether or not sales taxes are assessed on purchases made over the web.

Colburn doesn’t really seem to have a problem with bringing a more uniform tax approach to Internet sales, but it is his attempt to remove a status that probably shouldn’t be on professional sports leagues that is getting the attention now.

The NFL and other professional sports leagues are taxed as if they were charitable organizations. Senator Colburn has pointed out that while they may engage in charitable acts from time to time, they are profitable organizations that are in the business of making money.

Colburn also pointed out that taxpayers are losing around $91 million a year thanks to pro sports leagues saving money on taxes. These are the same leagues that are doling out hundreds of millions of dollars to grown men to play games.

The loophole that the National Football League, Major League Baseball and the NBA are using is the assumption that they are working to promote the sports they participate in general. The problem with that assumption is that most of the pro sports leagues have been promoting themselves rather than the sport in general.

When other professional football leagues have popped up, the National Football League has worked hard to make sure they don’t succeed at the same level they currently exist.

Unfortunately, the NFL and the rest of the pro sports leagues that benefit from this loophole are likely off the hook as the amendment ins’t likely to get a vote.

Senator Tom Coburn Wants To End NFL’s Tax Exempt Status is a post from: The Inquisitr

Earthquakes in Chile have cracked and deformed the Earth, according to a news study on quakes in the South American country. While tremors have been known to wreak havoc on the planet’s surface, more than 100 years of research suggests that the Earth mostly rebounds from them.

Blocks of the world’s crust have been seen springing back to where they were before over the course of months and sometimes years.

This kind of rebounding was first seen during investigations of the devastating 1906 San Francisco earthquake, which caused the destruction of more than 80 percent of the city.

The rebound can now be documented through satellite-based GPS systems that monitor how the Earth moved. But structural geologist Richard Allmendinger of Cornell University, along with his colleagues, believe that major earthquakes of magnitude 7 or more have caused the earth’s crust in northern Chile to crack permanently. Allmendinger explained:

“My graduate students and I originally went to northern Chile to study other features. While we were there, our Chilean colleague, Professor Gabriel Gonzalez of the Universidad Catolica del Norte, took us to a region where these cracks were particularly well-exposed.”

Allmendinger recalled being both awe-struck by the features and also curious as to how they formed. The marks and cracks in the Earth gave him and other researchers a unique record of earthquakes going back for millions of years. Allmendinger added that most analyses of ancient earthquakes only probe cycles of two to four of the ancient tremors. However, with Chile “our record of upper plate cracking spans thousands of earthquake cycles.”

The record helped the researchers examine their average behavior over a much longer time period. They discovered during the research that a small but significant 1 to 10 percent of the deformation of the earth caused by 2,000 to 9,000 earthquakes over the past 800,000 to one million years was permanent. Allmendinger explained:

“It is only in a place like the Atacama Desert that these cracks can be observed — in all other places, surface processes erase them within days or weeks of their formation, but in the Atacama, they are preserved for millions of years. We have every reason to believe that our results would be applicable to other areas, but is simply not preserved for study the way that it is in the Atacama Desert.”

The findings were published in the journal Nature Geoscience on April 28.

Earthquakes In Chile Deformed The Earth [Study] is a post from: The Inquisitr

Phoenix, AZ – A 36-year-old mother of nine has been arrested on the accusation of intentionally taking the life of her ninth child, a six-day-old newborn named Maya.

Authorities say Nina Koistinen deliberately suffocated her infant daughter on April 8 – pinching her nose and covering her mouth – admittedly because Nina was overwhelmed with too many kids and jealous of the attention lavished onto the child by her husband Bradley.

Bradley, who found the newborn unresponsive, was told by his wife that she’d accidentally fallen asleep on the baby while feeding her. Maya was rushed to Paradise Valley Hospital where she was pronounced dead 45 minutes later.

After, an autopsy was performed. The examiner found evidence of possible signs of suffocation beyond accidental means – enough to encourage police to probe further in the family’s background.

Court documents show investigators reviewed prior child protective service (CPS) reports and found Nina had made unsettling statements about wanting to suffocate their other children or wanting them to die in a car accident.

Nina later fessed up and told authorities, through an interview admission with her husband, how she’d gone about smothering her daughter.

Bradley, Nina’s husband of 15 years, supportively attended his wife’s initial appearance Friday and made an emotional plea to the court. He claimed they had been working on getting Nina’s mental illnesses under control, stating she had been battling bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and depression for years.

While choking back tears Bradley also said, “She has been the greatest mother to our kids. Never once has hurt any of our kids.”

Nina is being held on a secured bond of $1 million.

All of the aforementioned mental and emotional disorders can be difficult to manage, even with medications. Radical changes in stress and hormones can escalate symptoms, resulting in radical behavior. Studies have shown 20 percent of women suffered from increased anxiety and mood disorders during and immediately following pregnancy.

Arizona Mother Of Nine Smothered Newborn Daughter is a post from: The Inquisitr

A fire erupted from the wreckage of a collapsed building in Bangladesh on Sunday, killing what was thought to be the last survivor. The survivor, a woman, fought for 110 hours before the blaze broke out as rescuers worked to free her.

Along with killing the woman, the fire also injured three firefighters. Following the news of the woman’s death, firefighters were seen weeping on live television.

The woman, a widowed mother of an 18-month-old, was named Shahnaz. Her fight to survive became a symbol of hope for the country in the wake of its worst factory accident in history. Ahmed Ali explained of the fire:

“The fire broke out as we were cutting a beam to bring out what we believe was the last remaining survivor from the collapsed building. We managed to douse it, but as we came back we saw her dead.”

Ali added of the woman, who fought hard to stay alive, “She was a brave lady and fought until the end. We worked for 10-11 hours today just to try to bring her out alive. We took the challenge but we lost.”

The blaze was put out in a matter of minutes. After the failed rescue of the woman, who was believed to be the last survivor of the Bangladesh building collapse, the rescue operation turned to one of recovery. Workers were diffing manually to avoid harming survivors. However, they have now switched to earth-moving equipment to lift heavy slabs of concrete and clean up debris.

As they work, more bodies are expected to be found. The fire broke out right after authorities announced the arrest of the building’s owner, property tycoon Sohel Rana. Rana was discovered attempting to cross into India and was flown back to Dhaka. He will face charges over the building’s collapse, which killed at least 381 people.

As his arrest was announced, garment workers and relatives of those still missing cheered in the streets. They then took up a call, yelling, “Hang Rana, Hang the killer!” Along with the building’s owner, police have arrested four garment factory owners. About 2,5o0 people have been rescued from the collapsed building so far. Some had to undergo amputations in order to get free of the pancaked concrete slabs.

Officials announced on Saturday that another building owned by Rana was sealed off after large cracks appeared in its pillars. Meanwhile, the four factory bosses will face a maximum of five years in jail for charges of “causing death due to negligence.” They have been accused of forcing the workers to show up on Wednesday, despite visible cracks on the exterior of the building.
