Perhaps the most iconic role for which Lucy Lawless is known is her portrayal of the title role in Xena: Warrior Princess and now, with Lawless’ latest role as Countess Marburg on WGN’s Salem, Ms. Lawless finds that playing a character within yet another historically significant time period has brought back memories of that popular Greek heroine. Things have changed, Lucy admitted in a recent interview, and the female hero is no longer as cut and dried as it once was when Lawless fought evil as Xena, as writing has become more clever in the creation of anti-heroes with human frailties and human vices.

Again becoming historically relevant within the realm of fiction, Lawless’ Countess Marburg is the last in the extensive lineage of Germanic witches and, carrying that burden, has come to Salem to wrestle the power so wickedly wielded by Mary Sibley (Janet Montgomery). Lawless cautions fans of Salem not to take their entertainment so lightly. Lucy confesses that much of the detail in Salem is taken from historical accounts of real witches and the few records that have stood the test of time.

“I cherry-pick some of those awful awful stories and feed them into my character. The horrifying things that she does — like her beauty regime, for example — are stolen from historical accounts of witches in history.”

Lucy is the first to recognize that Salem brings a more insidious kind of horror to television. Lawless reveals that she grew up on horror, particularly the standard Dracula flicks of the ’70s and ’80s. But Salem lacks the cheesiness of those long past decades and Ms. Lawless admits that it can be easy to forget one isn’t watching an accurate historical recreation. After all, Lucy jokes, Salem certainly lacks Xena‘s wands and thunderbolts.

“Horror when I grew up was cheesy and you knew you were watching it. This is so high-end that you could be forgiven for thinking it is a historical account of something. In fact, it’s very educated horror. This is so high-end.”

Ms. Lawless sees much more than mere entertainment in Salem. Lucy’s critical eye and passion for activism recognizes a real relevance between the Salem witch trials and the events going on in contemporary society. Ms. Lawless credits the success and the growing interest in shows like Salem for the commentary they make on current events.

“Witch trials are really about the suppression of ideas. When conventional religious constructs become bullies, as we see happening in the Middle East or many places of the world, you’ve got rich pickings for a television show. It’s happening everywhere. It happens in the South.”

So, with the success Lucy Lawless has achieved in recent years, including her stint on Parks and Recreation and Veronica Mars, fans must have forgotten all about Lucy’s role as that warrior princess. Not so, Lawless answers.

“No, they’re watching Xena! They just had a convention in Los Angeles. Because it was the last one, I went to honor the early fans, and one third of the audience was new fans from Netflix! A third! A third of the audience was brand-new! So, yeah, that show’s got legs. Xena — she’s got legs.”

A man has been taken into custody on charges of child endangerment after he was caught on grocery store surveillance video punching a toddler in the face, sending him flying to the floor. After the child hits the floor, the man violently yanks the child by his arm into the air, sending him into a fit of tears.

The NY Daily News reports that a Youtube video showing the toddler being punched in the face went viral after someone uploaded it online in hopes of catching the man responsible. In the shocking video, you see a small child running through the Vest Market grocery store aisles in Bakersfield, California. Shortly after the small boy is seen alone in the aisle, a man comes from around the corner and punches the toddler in the face. The child falls to the floor from the force and is then yanked up violently by his arm.

The boy can then be seen crying and holding his face until a woman appears on the screen and takes the child outside. The video outraged the market owner and he showed the footage to the police, who began a search for the man in the video. On Thursday night, Justin Whittington was taken into police custody on charges of child endangerment stemming from the grocery store incident.

Police have not yet released the relation of the Whittington to the child, but Vest Market owner Harry Dindral says he is the boy’s father and is a “horrible man.” Whittington’s bail was set at $1 million and is being held in jail in lieu of bond until he is due in court on Monday.

Former WWE superstar CM Punk (real name Phil Brooks) recently conducted an interview with Sports Illustrated. During the interview, Punk (who is currently signed with UFC) was asked about his time in professional wrestling. Punk gave some interesting answers to the wrestling-centric questions, with some of Punk’s responses resulting in surprising and controversial statements by the former WWE champion.

CM Punk was first asked by Sports Illustrated what it was that made him such a good professional wrestler.

“Well, that’s another thing in that phony world. What does it mean to be a good fake wrestler? That’s an identity crisis that I think I struggled with. It doesn’t matter if you’re the best; someone else picks who they want in the top spot.”

It’s no secret that professional wrestlers typically hate it when they are called “fake” and their livelihood called “phony.” So why would a former wrestling superstar such as Punk, who spent the better part of 15 years of his life as a pro wrestler, talk in such a demeaning way about his former profession?

Much of Punk’s current disdain for pro wrestling probably is rooted in the on-going lawsuit between WWE and himself. WWE is currently in the process of suing Punk over controversial remarks he made on Colt Cabana’s podcast last year concerning WWE doctor Chris Amann. Punk had accussed Amann of mis-diagnosing a staph infection in his back. The case is not expected to go to court and will likely result in a settlement between the two sides.

Later in the interview, CM Punk was asked about why more pro wrestlers don’t pursue a career in mixed martial arts.

“I’ve always been surrounded by guys who talked about it. Half of them talk about it; none of them do it. They have their little comfortable safety net doing WWE stuff, I guess. I would much rather give it a shot than just talk about it.”

CM Punk is currently training with Roufusport in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, in preparation for his first fight with UFC, which is tentatively scheduled to take place later this year. Though entering the fight game at a relatively late age of 36, CM Punk has reportedly impressed many of his training partners with his ability in the octagon thus far.

Despite Punk’s obvious animosity for his former employer, his remarks were of a nature that could be offensive to everyone involved in pro wrestling, not just those employed by WWE. It will be interesting to see if any big names in the wrestling industry issue any kind of response to CM Punk’s statements.

Amy Schumer doesn’t want her MTV Movie Awards hosting gig to be remembered as nothing more than a series of headline-grabbing, offensive jokes. Some comedians thrive on causing controversy by setting absolutely no boundaries for themselves, but Amy recently revealed one hot topic that will be off limits for her on Sunday night: Keeping Up with the Kardashians star Bruce Jenner.

As the Inquisitr previously reported, Bruce Jenner is about to announce to the public that he’s transgender. During an April 24 20/20 interview, Bruce will talk about his decision to transition to a woman. This is a huge story that everyone will be talking about for the coming weeks, but Amy Schumer isn’t going to touch it during her time on the MTV Movie Awards stage. However, while talking to ET Online about her decision to avoid Jenner jokes, Amy couldn’t resist making a positive funny about Bruce’s new look.

“I would never. I think he looks good,” the Trainwreck star quipped. “We have the same hair.”

Perhaps Schumer decided not to go after Jenner on Sunday night because transgender men and women have it so tough. They’re an oft-misunderstood minority, and many of them struggle to find love and acceptance. Last December, 17-year-old teen Leelah Alcorn drew worldwide attention to their struggles after she committed suicide by stepping in front of a truck. Leelah was devastated that her parents wouldn’t allow her to undergo male-to-female gender reassignment surgery.

During an interview with the Los Angeles Times, Amy Schumer revealed that death is another topic that she won’t joke about.

“I’m not treating it like a roast at all. The meanest stuff is about myself…. I want everybody to rest assured that there won’t be any jokes about recent deaths or people changing their gender. I’m not interested in doing that.”

Being a kinder, more sensitive comedian might pay off for Amy — other comedians have learned that joking about Bruce Jenner’s gender identity doesn’t go over so well. Angry viewers accused Jamie Foxx of being transphobic after he joked about Jenner during the iHeart Radio Music Awards, and a few jokes about the Keeping Up With the Kardashians star were cut from the Comedy Central Roast of Justin Bieber.

Instead of going for really low blows that might offend entire groups of people, Amy Schumer is going to lightly roast her fellow celebs. She gave ET a teaser of what her material will be like.

“Kevin Hart should be the most afraid but I did give him a heads up. I just thought it’d be funny to go after him super hard. I want to see Get Hart. A movie that teaches you how to survive seeing a Kevin Hart movie.”

Amy Schumer obviously doesn’t want to cause an outrage with politically incorrect jokes, but this doesn’t mean that she’s not going to be raunchy. In the clip below, Amy reveals that she’s also not against using her own body parts to get a rise out of the audience.

Convicted murderer Jodi Arias will sentenced on April 13, almost six weeks after a mistrial was declared. Watch live stream coverage of the sentencing that will take place at Maricopa County Superior Court in Phoenix, Arizona, on Monday morning.

AZ Central reports that Judge Sherry Stephens will decide on Monday whether Arias will be sentenced to life in prison or by eligible for possible release after serving 25 years.

Sentencing will begin at 8:30 a.m. MST/11:30 a.m. EST. According to CBS 5, Maricopa County Superior Court Judge Sherry Stephens may exclude some live footage of witnesses who may refuse to appear on camera. Whether or not Arias will speak on Monday is unknown.

Travis Alexander, 30, was found five days after he was killed in Mesa, Arizona. Jodi Arias was arrested a month after his death, accused with shooting her ex-lover in the head, stabbing him nearly 30 times, and slitting his throat.

On March 5, one juror refused to vote for the death penalty with 11 other jurors. This was the second time that a jury was unable to agree on the death sentence for Arias, who was convicted of killing her ex-lover, Travis Alexander in June, 2008. When the judge declared a mistrial on March 5, many trial watchers on Twitter were outraged that she had escaped the death penalty for the second time.

Ben Crenshaw said goodbye to his golf-playing career, and will now begin his new career.

According to the New York Post, Crenshaw strode to the 18th hole to the crowd’s thunderous applause, while in the offing, thunder rang from the sky. Crenshaw hit his 176th shot for the two days he participated, then it was over. Crenshaw had played his last round, his 138th round, in his 44th and final Masters tournament.

On the side of the 18th green stood Crenshaw’s wife and daughters, giving him a standing ovation. At the back of the 18th green, stood Crenshaw’s former caddy, Carl Jackson. Jackson had been Crenshaw’s Augusta caddy since 1976. Jackson was here only as an observer, however, due to him battling cancer, so Carl’s brother Buddy caddied for Crenshaw.

When it was all over, the two men met at the back of the 18th, Jackson congratulating Crenshaw, then Crenshaw reaching out and hugging him, then Jackson reciprocating.

“He just said, ‘I love you,’ and I said, ‘I love you’ back,” Crenshaw said. “We know how much each of us mean to each other. It was very powerful.”

Crenshaw buried his face into Jackson’s chest, the emotion of the moment too much to bear. As Crenshaw began crying, the skies opened up and it began to rain.

ESPN is reporting that Crenshaw and current Masters leader Jordan Spieth were polar opposites on the scoreboard. Crenshaw finished his two days with an 22-over-par 176, meaning Crenshaw ended in last place for his last tournament. But that’s not the most poignant happenstance here; for the last few years, Crenshaw has been mentoring Spieth to help improve Spieth’s game, while Jackson has been mentoring Spieth’s caddy, Michael Greller, about the intricacies of the Augusta course.

Crenshaw and Spieth, both fellow Texans, have been working together so well that Spieth has a lead this year, led most of the way in the Masters last year, and finished in second place, Spieth’s first ever Masters appearance.

Spieth began as the learner. When it’s over this year, he may win the Masters.

Spieth’s performance will, of course, not be Crenshaw’s lasting legacy at Augusta. Crenshaw has won the Masters twice, once in 1984 and again in 1995. The 1995 Masters was most significant to “Gentle Ben”, because he came into the tournament at the age of 45, and his instructor, Harvey Penick, had just passed away.

Few gave Crenshaw a chance because of his age. but he combined aggressive play and the monumental emotion to secure his second Masters championship. Now, Crenshaw is telling people that he will continue mentoring Spieth, and will be at the 15th hole, watching the match with a sandwich and a beer.

Golf Great Ben Crenshaw Ends Playing Career, Will Now Be Mentor To Spieth is an article from: The Inquisitr News

In Leroy, Minnesota, police are investigating the theft of about $70,000 worth of bull semen from a farm in southern Minnesota. The theft occurred sometime between April 1 and April 7. The only day that that farm was unattended was on Easter Sunday, when the owner of the farm, Daniel Weness, and his hired hand were away for the day.

The semen was stored in a frozen container that was the size of a milk jug. The semen was inside and divided into vials that ranged in price from $300 to $1,500 per vial, totaling a whopping $70,000. The container of the vials of semen was being stored in an unlocked barn. The theft was reported on Tuesday, and the police have no suspects in the case.

Mark May of the Mower Police Department said there is a big business and high demand for the pricey semen in the farming communities of Minnesota.

“There is a market for this, a lot of people bid on it or purchase it instead of transporting their animals to and from site. They can purchase this vial of bull semen and inseminate their cow and I guess it’s just a more reliable way to do it.”

The semen is costly in part because the process of obtaining it is rather daunting. And why is it necessary? Sometimes the animals do not to wish to mate, or are not on the premises with the female, making artificial insemination of the female necessary. The process also involves tricking a bull to believe he is mounting a decoy steer, and having him have intercourse with an imitation steer vagina, which is purchased at a livestock store. The farmer must watch carefully for the completion of intercourse and ejaculation, at which time he quickly collects the semen from the artificial steer vagina and places it in a vial and puts the fluid on liquid nitrogen. The higher quality the bull, the more his semen is worth. The process is repeated as many times as necessary and the vials are sold to other farmers who wish to add to their livestock through artificial insemination.

You may find this story bizarre, but it’s not the first time the Inquisitr has published a story about bull semen. In 2011, a greyhound bus lost a nitrogen canister full of bull semen which shut down a highway. The canister was emitting liquid nitrogen and a foul odor, and resulted in a net loss of $80,000 in bull semen. You can read that story here.

In his 1987 song “Elvis Is Everywhere,” Mojo Nixon crooned about seeing The King everywhere he went. Nowadays, the psychobilly superstar could easily rewrite his signature song and make it all about Ronda Rousey because these days, she’s popping up at every turn.

As reported by Inquisitr, the undefeated women’s UFC champ even popped up at this year’s WrestleMania in a memorable spot with Triple H and Sptephanie McMahon, possibly setting up an “legitimate” bout in WWE at some point in the future. The segment prompted a lot of reaction and intrigue on social media and throughout the Internet, even garnering an exceptional amount of coverage by the mainstream media. Rousey’s peers have also weighed in, including some of her fellow UFC competitors who recently spoke with MMA Junkie regarding Ronda’s crossover appeal.

“I’m happy for her,” UFC women’s strawweight champion Joanna Jedrzejczyk said. “If she’s happy, I’m happy for her. She’s a boss, you know? I like her so much. I’m happy she’s doing great stuff outside the gym and outside the octagon, so I’m happy for her.”

A number of other UFC competitors spoke to MMA Junkie regarding Rousey’s WrestleMania moment, offering unanimous praise for her ability to self-promote across genres and platforms. UFC heavyweight Anthony “Frieght Train” Hamilton told MMA Junkie he regards Rousey as “an icon,” noting that “she’s everywhere right now.” Ross Pearson described Rousey’s work with Triple H and Stephanie McMahon as “pretty epic.”

Indeed, there’s no arguing against the fact that Ronda Rousey’s star is on the rise these days. WrestleZone reports that Rousey, along with her friends and fellow athletes Marina Shafir, Shayna Baszler and Jessamyn Duke, now have their own “store” on a popular wrestling-themed t-shirt site that features a shirt inspired by wrestling’s legendary Four Horsemen team.

Ronda Rousey also made headlines earlier this week when Walmart announced they would not stock her forthcoming book My Fight/Your Fight in stores due to its violent content. Given the present course of her career, it’s unlikely that such a move—even when made by the world’s biggest retailer—will substantially impact sales of the highly anticipated tome. If anything, the controversy could ultimately pique the interest of many who might not have otherwise considered book as a “must read” prior to the recent controversy.

As if all of this isn’t enough work for an exceptionally well-rounded and highly capable woman, Ronda Rousey also appears in the new trailer for the upcoming movie Entourage. The Washington Post notes that Rousey appears with Tom Brady and Rob Gronkowski of the New England Patriots as well as soccer legend Thierry Henry in the promotional clip.

For the folks who aren’t fans of Ronda Rousey, there’s nothing but hard cheese on the horizon as this diva with a difference seems intent on becoming a queen of all media. Sports, publishing, and direct marketing have brought success and notoriety to Rousey thus far. In the off chance she might look to rock and roll as her next frontier, it’s a safe bet that Mojo Nixon would be up for a duet with the pulchritudinous pugialist. The title would be a no-brainer: “Ronda Rousey is Everywhere.”

Iman Abdulmajid was already a supermodel by the time she married David Bowie in 1992. Born in Somalia, Iman was discovered in Nairobi by American photographer Peter Beard. Beard returned to the U.S. with photos of Iman and eventually convinced her to leave Kenya, where she was studying political science at a university.

Iman’s trip to the U.S. was not completely on the up-and-up, as the supermodel revealed to New York Magazine this week. 18 years old at the time, Abdulmajid would have been required to get her parents’ permission to get a passport to leave Kenya. Knowing her parents would not approve of her plans to become a model, she lied about her age and left without informing them.

But pretending to be 19 and jetting off to New York did not get past her father, who learned about the trip through an unlikely source: Newsweek magazine. As Iman told New York Magazine, her success got back to her family.

“You know how they found out? I was in Newsweek a week later. It’s the only magazine my father reads, and the next thing, he’s reading, and there’s a picture of me in New York, [saying,] ‘She’s the hottest model now.'”

She also admitted her transgression was not legal, but doubts it will get her into trouble now.

“I broke the law! But nobody can touch me now, I’m 60 years old, it’s too late. The time has passed.”

Abdulmajid is 59. She turns 60 on July 25, according to Biography.

Iman started her cosmetics company in 1994 and, unlike her notoriously reclusive husband David Bowie, remains a regular presence on the New York party circuit. Abdulmajid is constantly updating her fans on the goings-on of her business through her social media accounts.

Iman discussed her famous husband in a interview with The Guardian last summer. She gave some insight as to why he’s chosen to remain private for the last several years.

“David is even more of a homebody than I am. At least I go to parties once in a while. He does [just enjoy his own company]. I also think there is nothing that he hasn’t seen. He’s been to all the parties that there are.”

Asked by The Guardian whether her preoccupation with her company while Bowie maintains a private life was a “role reversal,” Iman seemed to bristle at the suggestion.

“Are you kidding me? He makes far more money than I do. What role reversal? I don’t know why people think he’s not doing anything. He’s making his money work for him. That’s what he’s doing.”

David Bowie’s Supermodel Wife Iman Broke The Law To Leave Kenya As A Teenager is an article from: The Inquisitr News

The Vatican is stalling on the appointment of French Ambassador Laurent Stéfanini, and European media sources say it’s because he is a homosexual. Vatican officials have not commented on the situation, but it wouldn’t be the first time the Holy See has rejected an openly gay ambassador.

In 2013, Pope Francis made headlines when he gave a dispassionate answer to questions about the existence of a “gay lobby” within the Vatican.

“If a person is gay and seeks God and has good will, who am I to judge?”

The quote seemed like a major break from the previous church objections to homosexuality, but it might be that the media read too much into the Pope’s rhetoric.

According to the BBC, it normally takes about a month for the Vatican to approve a new ambassador. It’s now been three months for Laurent Stéfanini, and Vatican officials are not explaining why.

The French foreign ministry told the AFP news agency, “He is one of our best diplomats. That’s why we appointed him. We are waiting for a reply to our request.”

The Guardian describes Stéfanini as a 55-year-old practicing Catholic, and a man of “exceptional culture.” He served as deputy ambassador to the Vatican from 2001 to 2005, and is French President Hollande’s current head of protocol.

Despite his credentials, the Vatican has been pushing for Stéfanini to move aside for some time according to some sources. The Vatican Insider reported that Archbishop Luigi Ventura invited the diplomat to a meeting on February 5th, where he informally asked Stéfanini renounce his nomination because of his sexual orientation.

The Vatican Insider later added that it was “a decision taken by the Pope himself.”

It’s still not clear how reliable the Vatican Insider’s sources are, but Pope Francis is already taking heat with French media outlets running headlines like “The Pope Tarnishes His Image” from the Libération Daily.

Despite running counter to Pope Francis’ liberal image, the rejection would not be unprecedented for the church. The Guardian reports that the Vatican openly rejected two people in the past. One from Argentina, because he was divorced and living with his new partner. Another from France, who was gay and in a civil union with another man.

In 2009, a source at the Vatican confirmed to the Catholic News Service that marital status (and thereby sexual orientation) matters in the appointment process.

“For Catholic ambassadors, there is the question of their matrimonial situation. But outside of that, I don’t think there are other criteria.”

Still, the French ambassador could be receiving the cold-shoulder for supporting gay marriage. French legislators made gay marriage legal in 2013, despite the Vatican’s grumblings. Stéfanini’s appointment might be stalled as a passive punishment. In either case, Pope Francis might lose a few liberal supporters as a result.

A Hannity guest storms off the set during a heated segment on the Thursday night broadcast of the Fox News Channel series, and footage of the exchange and the exit of one guest has now made headlines. According to The Blaze, Sean Hannity had two guests on the show to talk about the Walter Scott case. One man agreed with Hannity’s point of view, and the other man was vehemently against the opinion expressed by the host and his guest.

According to Vox, Sean Hannity made it clear with his comments that he thought the death of Walter Scott was wrongful. The police officer should not have shot him in this case. He expressed his opinion on the matter throughout the segment.

“You do not shoot an innocent man in the back eight times in cold blood like this. If he’s not a threat to the officer, or threat to anybody else, there is never a justification in terms of tactics and techniques and training. There’s no justification for what I see on that video. None. Let’s assume he punched the police officer in the face, raked his jaw with a hammer punch, and broke his jaw. At that moment, when [the officer] fired the weapon and hit that man eight times in the back, he was not a threat to that officer or anybody else — and that means that it’s not a justifiable use of force, period.”

On the show with Hannity for the segment were Rev. Jesse Lee Peterson and attorney Leo Terrell. Peterson was opposed to the opinion shared by Terrell and Hannity. He was not ready to side with them and say that the police officer wrongfully shot Scott.

He was very passionate about his opinion, and this angered Terrell during the broadcast. Terrell fired back against Peterson during the exchange.

“This is the second time in Fox News cable that you and I, Sean Hannity, agree. Jesse Lee Peterson is the only man on the face of this earth who is talking about everything else but the unlawful shooting of this man. … And for you to come on this show as a black man and to say somehow — to justify this shooting, you are an embarrassment to the world right now! The whole world is looking at how stupid you are! This is embarrassing. You are embarrassing.”

After Peterson continued to defend his position, Terrell spoke up again, and he threatened to leave the studio. He would not “listen to [the] hate.”

When Peterson would not stop his own tirade, Terrell got up and left the segment after yelling that he was done. Hannity told Peterson that Terrell had left the studio, and Peterson proceeded to call the man a coward. You can watch the complete exchange in the video below.

This is not the first heated segment over the race issues plaguing this country since the Michael Brown shooting in Ferguson seen on Hannity’s Fox News program. According to the Huffington Post, Hannity spoke with a protester in Ferguson last month after the shooting of two police officers in the city.

The segment started with Hannity and the man speaking about the incident. Hannity and the man, Ivory Ned, disagreed over the shooting. After Hannity read some of the report to the man, the two men’s conversation escalated to a shouting match.

This latest incident on Hannity has caused some to react on social media. Many were shocked that Hannity was not the person causing the trouble during the segment.

Sean Hannity is a host known for sharing his views in a strong manner. He will not only speak up about issues facing the country, but he will speak up to defend himself as well.

According to a previous Inquisitr report, Hannity had a strong reaction to a poll that called him one of the worst reporters on cable news. He did not defend himself on-air, but he went to social media instead. It was on Twitter that he had a heated exchange with the man who ran the site that released the poll.

Real’s Sergio Ramos netted an equalizer two minutes into the added five. Then in extra time, Real Madrid simply turned on the gas, powering in three goals — one each from Cristiano Ronaldo, Gareth Bale, and Marcelo — to give Real their 10th European championship.

But if Los Blancos hope for Number 11, they’ll have to get by Atléti again, this time over a two-legged tie in the tournament’s quarterfinal round, with the first game played Tuesday at Vicente Calderon Stadium, the Atléti home ground.

Atlético Madrid has already proven that they play a style that creates serious problems for their “big brothers” across town. They’ve already beaten Real Madrid three times this season, in both La Liga and Copa Del Rey competition — including a 4-0 dismantling back in January.

Atléti has accomplished the feat by exploiting the defensive midfield weaknesses that Real can often hide with its blistering, goal-scoring attack led by Ronaldo and Bale. Atlético Madrid so far has shown the counterattacking prowess to strike quickly on the offensive end while sitting deep enough to lock up the feared Real Madrid goal-scorers.

The new Gallup study of 7,272 adults showed that half had left careers simply because of an unbearable boss. Workers may hate their higher-ups, but the feeling may be mutual. Gallup also found that managers weren’t satisfied with their work situation, either. Just 35 percent of U.S. managers said they felt engaged on the job. Fifty-one percent said they weren’t actively engaged while at work, and 14 percent confessed that they actively tune out at work, and give very little effort to their job. Jim Harter, chief researcher at Gallup regarding workplace productivity, says he is continuously surprised by the staggering numbers of unhappy workers.

“When managers aren’t engaged, it affects their employees, which in turn affects productivity, whether people stay or leave, how often they’re absent, and then ultimately productivity.”

The only situation that causes people to leave a job more than a bad boss is a bad coworker, the poll showed. So the evidence is clear: corporations need to be very selective about who is promoted. Everyone isn’t going to love everyone, but there are certain characteristics make it more likely for a worker to like his job: when his or her opinion is valued, feeling appreciated for work done well, given constructive (not destructive) criticism, an opportunity for growth, adequate monetary compensation, and the ability to have autonomy, or make some decisions on their own. Harter says promotions may be the single best way to control how bad bosses happen.

“Obviously, organizations can’t just change out all their managers in the short term, but they can control who they name [as manager] next, based on their natural talent to motivate others and engage workers.”

While it’s true that work will always be work, and therefore not always fun, most people agree that being treated respectfully and feeling like they have the tools necessary to do quality work can make a big difference in job satisfaction, which is something that bosses directly impact. Corporations need to watch carefully for signs of engagement in the boss, genuine interest in employees, and the ability to handle conflict in a positive way.

Half Of U.S. Workers Have Quit Their Job Because They Disliked Their Boss is an article from: The Inquisitr News

A mom abandoned her severely disabled son in the woods for five days so she could go visit her lover. The Chicago Tribune reports that a woman left her 21-year-old quadriplegic son in a wooded area near Philadelphia on Monday then boarded a bus to headed for Montgomery County, Maryland.

The young man’s school noticed him missing from class and called his aunt. Authorities contacted the mother, but she lied and said he was with her and her boyfriend in Maryland. Later on, a passerby noticed her son about 100 yards into the woods from a Philadelphia roadway Friday night, NBC Philadelphia reports. The 21-year-old — who has cerebral palsy and is non-verbal — was found lying in leaves and covered with a blanket. There was a wheelchair and a bible near him. He reportedly was in bad weather that was full of rain and cold while he was in the woods for five entire days. Police are shocked he lived through the harsh elements.

Police say the son isn’t able to communicate, so he couldn’t explain how he got where he was. Authorities realized his mother abandoned him Monday before she left to see her boyfriend in Maryland.

The unidentified quadriplegic was hospitalized for dehydration, malnutrition, a cut to his back, and multiple eye injuries, Lt. John Walker said. He’s currently in “stable condition.”

Walker said it’s a heartbreaking case and hard to believe another human, “especially a mother, could treat someone like that.” He said the woman’s son was exposed to various dangers while on his own.

“A lot of things could have happened out there. Obviously he’s in the middle of a wooded area. You have wild animals there… this kid could not defend himself. He does not function at all.”

Several of the victim’s aunts are at his bedside and are being interviewed about his medical history. He’s completely dependent on others for his survival and is unable to care for himself at all. His mother was taking care of him before she abandoned him. She also has another son who’s 16-years-old. He, too, is with family members.

NBC Philadelphia identifies the quadriplegic’s mother as Nyia Parler. Eight hours after police found the young man, his mother still hadn’t returned. A warrant for Parler’s arrest is out and she’ll being charged with “aggravated assault, simple assault, reckless endangerment, neglect of a care-dependent person, unlawful restraint, kidnapping and false imprisonment,” according to the report.

Twenty dam workers were killed in Pakistan while they slept. Interior minister Akbar Hussain Durrani commented on the cowardly massacre.

“All were sleeping in their camp when they were targeted.”

According to the BBC, the Balochistan Liberation Front are taking credit for the 20 workers that were killed at the dam. According to reports, gunmen were able to navigate their way past a group of security guards who guard the dam and the workers.

The location of the dam is in the Gobdan area of district Turbat. The dam project is one that is being funded by the army. The dam is located in the province of Balochistan. Balochistan is on the border of Iran and has been a volatile area. In Balochistan, a low-level insurgency has been happening. Nationalist and Baluch groups both are fighting to secure resources in the area.

Balochistan is the poorest province in Pakistan. It is no secret that criminal activity tends to always migrate into the areas that are suffering economic hardships. It is known that the criminal activity in this area includes death squads, kidnappings, drugs, and Taliban insurgency.

The 20 dam workers that were killed were civilians. Sixteen of the workers were from the Punjab province. The other four were from Sindh province. Not everyone in the attack was killed though. Three workers are still alive.

Since the dam is a project that is backed by the army, any person working on the project would be seen as part of the government. Even though the 20 dam workers were civilians, they suffered the fate of death because they were working on this government project.

Sarfaraz Bugti, the Balochistan Home Minister, made it clear that the people who are responsible for the murder of the 20 dam workers are being hunted by Frontier Corps troops.

“We will chase them down and bring them to justice. We need help in this war against terrorists. Alone, we cannot fight.”

A spokesmen for the Balochistan government, Jan Mohammad Buledi, stated that the families of the 20 workers who were killed would be offered one million rupees. Money will not do anything to bring these workers back home. It will help these families take care of bills and whatever costs are entailed with burying the victims.

Pakistan has many problems they need to deal with. Until the government gets control of the country back, more civilian workers will end up caught in the crossfire.

There is hope that the people responsible for killing these 20 dam workers are found and brought to justice.

Spider-Man fans have heard it enough that many know the entire story by heart and it doesn’t help that both big screen treatments of the Spider-Man story began with an updated (though essentially the same) version of the same origin tale. Now, with news that there will be a third incarnation of Spider-Man, fears have been mounting that fans will be expected to sit through a third version of the same story.

Not so, says Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige.

“There is a young kid [already] running around New York City in a homemade version of the Spider-Man costume in the MCU [Marvel Comics Universe]. You just don’t know it yet… In Spider-Man’s very specific case, where there have been two retellings of that origin in the last whatever it’s been – [thirteen] years – for us we are going to take it for granted that people know that, and the specifics.”

While Feige thinks the previous Spider-Man films were dead on with much of how they represented Spider-Man, there was also much that was missed, and Kevin would like to see that corrected in the new Spider-Man reboot. In particular, Peter Parker (A.K.A. Spider-Man) was primarily a high school student in the comic books, but, when the film adaptations came along, the story pushed Spider-Man into young adulthood, shoving him out of high school as soon as possible.

Also specifically mentioned by Mr. Feige is the fact that comic book Spider-Man is frequently encountering other heroes within the M.C.U., something which hadn’t been possible with past film adaptations.

Kevin also commented on the general appearance of Spider-Man in the films. While both previous film versions of Spider-Man showed a faithful representation of the Spider-Man costume, Feige feels that the look could still be improved upon.

“I was more involved in the Raimi ones, and think they did a very good job. But that being said, we’ve already designed the costume, which is different than any of the ones that have come before. And yet ours is classic Spidey, as I think you’ll see.”

Although casting hasn’t yet begun for this new, younger Spider-Man, a choice will have to be made very soon, because the new Spider-Man will make his debut long before the first official film. Spider-Man will first be seen in Captain America: Civil War, which is set to hit theaters on May 6, 2016.

The new Spider-Man solo film, which is being written by Drew Goddard (Netflix’s Daredevil), has a release date of July 28, 2017.

‘Spider-Man’ Won’t Be A Third Retelling Of The Origin Story is an article from: The Inquisitr News

The two sons of rock star John Mellencamp were sentenced Friday after entering guilty pleas in a 2013 attack on a 19-year-old youth after a party in Bloomington, Indiana — not far from where their famous father still lives.

But did the pair — the only two boys out of five children fathered by the “Pink Houses” hitmaker — get off easy, receiving barely a slap on the wrist for their violent assault, allegedly committed with a third man, Ty Smith, in July of 2013?

Ty Smith is the son of a former coach of the Indiana University baseball team, Tracy Smith. Ty Smith is still facing a court hearing on the charges.

Speck Mellencamp, 19, and his brother Hud Mellencamp, were each sentenced to a year of probation, but the court allowed the probation to be served remotely so they could attend college.

Speck Mellencamp was also sentenced to four days in jail, with one day credit for the brief time he had already spent behind bars. Hud Mellencamp’s additional sentence consisted of 50 hours of community service.

The Mellencamp brothers attacked the man, they said, because they thought he was the guy who had punched Speck Mellencamp (above, left) in the face earlier that night at the party. Whether the victim had actually committed that alleged offense was unclear.

Both of the Mellencamp sons earlier faced felony assault charges, and both had pleaded not guilty to those charges. However, prosecutors recently agreed to drop the charges down to misdemeanor battery.

When that happened, the two Mellencamp sons changed their pleas from not guilty to guilty and were sentenced — in what seems like barely a slap on the wrist for both.

According to Monroe County Chief Deputy Prosecutor Bob Miller, the charges were lightened because the victim suffered no “serious bodily injury” as a result of the beating.

Police reports said that the Mellencamp sons and Smith “punched, kicked and stomped” the 19-year-old — but apparently, according to the prosecutor, they did not really hurt him.

The earlier felony charges alleged that the victim had, indeed, suffered “serious bodily injury,” but prosecutors decided that there were no such serious injuries after all.

Hud Mellencamp plays football for Duke University, though he joined the team as a “walk on” player and was not recruited by the North Carolina school for athletics.

John Mellencamp was not in the courtroom when his sons were sentenced.

Louis Tomlinson is officially out of a relationship and out of work (until the tour resumes) — and it makes you wonder what he is doing with his time. Only a week ago, Louis Tomlinson was in Dubai performing for One Direction’s last tour date on April 4 — but he has obviously been very busy.

Until they resume touring on June 10 in Vienna, Austria, Louis Tomlinson and the guys have a lot of time on their hands. They say that idle hands are the devil’s playground, and it might appear that this applies to Louis Tomlinson. In addition to the Twitter war with Naughty Boy, Louis Tomlinson has been seen with a new lady, is getting bet on as a potential X Factor judge, and is getting an obscure tongue lashing from Simon Cowell.

Dominating most of the past two weeks, the ongoing battle on social media between Louis Tomlinson and Naughty Boy seems to be petering out. Louis Tomlinson got upset with Zayn Malik’s new producer, Naughty Boy, and called him out on Twitter around March 30 — and the exchange went on and on.

Now, the BBC News Beat reports that Simon Cowell has new comments about Louis Tomlinson and the rest of One Direction.

Simon Cowell started by saying that he supported Zayn Malik when he decided to leave One Direction — and “didn’t try to talk Zayn Malik out of leaving One Direction.” Simon also said, “I knew for a while he [Zayn] was thinking about, you know, the future…. It did come as a bit of a shock, but I have to look after him and look after the boys. If somebody doesn’t want to do something you shouldn’t make them do it.”

The rest of One Direction will stay together, Simon Cowell says, despite rumors that Louis Tomlinson might leave.

Simon Cowell told the BBC, “Interestingly, with the guys, within days, once they got over the shock they were like united, strong. They put on some incredible shows afterwards. The future’s bright, I think.”

About Naughty Boy, Zayn Malik, and Louis Tomlinson, Simon Cowell reminded Louis and Zayn that they are still under the same record contract company — which belongs to Simon Cowell and is called Syco.

Perhaps Simon Cowell was telling Louis Tomlinson to play nice with his fellow-label-mate Zayn Malik when Cowell stated at the Britain’s Got Talent launch during the second week of April, that Zayn Malik was still “under his wing.” Simon Cowell also stated the following, “As long as the boys want it – and I think they do – they’ll carry on being as successful as ever, and Zayn will have a great career as well.”

Speaking of Simon Cowell and X Factor, Louis Tomlinson is being tapped as the next face on the judges panel. After Louis Walsh decided to retire after 11 years, he said that new faces were needed — and gamblers are putting their money on Louis Tomlinson as Walsh’s replacement.

The Mirror U.K. interviewed Alex Donohue of the gambling website, Ladbrokes. About Louis Tomlinson, Alex Donohue says, “Walsh has been dropping hints for years but it finally looks like all retirement bets are off. When it comes to his replacement, the odds suggest One Direction may lose another member.”

After Louis Walsh told reporters that he was going to quit the X Factor, the bets for Louis Tomlinson as his replacement surged on the Ladbrokes website — meaning that the public clearly votes in Louis Tomlinson as their choice for an X Factor judge.

Outside of being bet on by the public and being scolded by Simon Cowell, Louis Tomlinson has been spending some of his vacation in London with a mysterious blonde woman. The Daily Mail U.K. released a long series of exclusive photos that show Louis Tomlinson may have moved on from Eleanor Calder — but no official status of Louis Tomlinson’s relationship with this woman is known at this time.

As previously reported by the Inquisitr, a new lady in Louis Tomlinson’s life would certainly be terrible for any fans hoping he will get into a relationship with Harry Styles.

As far as what is up next for Louis Tomlinson, fans can expect him and One Direction to go into the recording studio to make tracks for their upcoming album under the Syco label.

Ian McKellen and Emma Watson are teaming up for a fantasy fan’s dream collaboration. The wizard from The Hobbit and the witch from Harry Potter will star together in Disney’s live-action Beauty and the Beast remake.

Ian McKellen’s Lord of the Rings character might resemble Dumbledore, but the beloved actor isn’t going to play a friendly mentor to Emma Watson’s captive character, future Disney princess Belle. Instead, he’ll play the Moaning Myrtle of Beauty and the Beast. According to Variety, McKellen has been cast as Cogsworth, the control freak clock who is always butting heads with laid-back candelabra Lumière.

In the animated Beauty and the Beast movie, Cogsworth was Prince Adam’s butler before his castle was cursed. The clock gets easily ticked off by the other servants-turned-furniture — many of them just want to have a good time, but Cogsworth tries to keep them in line so that their behavior doesn’t anger the temperamental Beast. Cogsworth was a bit irritating in the animated movie, but maybe a lovable actor like Ian McKellen can turn him into a fan favorite.

Because he’ll spend most of Beauty and the Beast as a clock, it’s presumed that Ian McKellen’s role will consist mostly of voice work. According to People Magazina, he’ll be joined by Emma Thompson as cheerful teapot Mrs. Potts, and Kevin Kline will play Belle’s father Maurice.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, Dan Stevens has been cast as the Beast/Prince Adam, and Josh Gad will play Le Fou, the loyal sidekick of villain Gaston. Gaston will be played by McKellen’s Hobbit costar Luke Evans, and this won’t be the movie’s only reunion — Beauty and the Beast will mark the second time Ian McKellen has worked with director Bill Condon.

According to Deadline, Condon and McKellen previously teamed up to film Mr. Holmes, a look at the post-retirement life of beloved Detective Sherlock Holmes. Luckily, the 93-year-old isn’t finished solving mysteries just yet — he keeps “wrestling with the case that forced him into retirement.” Mr. Holmes will hit theaters on July 17, but viewers will have to wait much longer for Beauty and the Beast — it’s currently slated for a March 17, 2017, release.

At the rate Disney is going, it might get around to rebooting its own movie inspired by Sherlock Holmes, The Great Mouse Detective. The House of Mouse’s live-action Cinderella remake recently hit theaters, and it put a new spin on the Sleeping Beauty story by focusing on the fairy tale’s villain in Maleficent. As the Inquisitr previously reported, Disney is also working on a live-action Pinocchio movie, and Ryan Gosling is teaming up with Hobbit director Guillermo del Toro for a Haunted Mansion reboot.

Ian McKellen Joining Emma Watson In ‘Beauty And The Beast': Maybe He’ll Make Cogsworth Tolerable is an article from: The Inquisitr News

Daredevil hit the small screen on Netflix with a bang on Friday. Not only has it received critical praise from the media but it also got some early love from fans on twitter.

One question looms large though about whether or not to watch Daredevil — are there simply too many superheroes on both television and cinema screens? It’s starting to seem like everybody and their Aunt Fanny is throwing on some spandex and hitting the streets, or the air, or space, to fight crime of one sort or another. But the silver lining to this flood of costumes is that in order to rise above the pack, the show really needs to have something a little different. In an interview with Indiewire, showrunner Steven S. DeKnight, talks about this fresh take on Daredevil.

“Really, for us, it was more about approaching [Daredevil] as a crime drama first and a superhero adaptation second. Not all the characters in comic books lend themselves to that, but it was really the heart of Daredevil. So, that made our choice very simple. It doesn’t all have to be ‘put on the tights and fight a giant robot and save the world.'”

Daredevil is the story of Matt Murdock, a character with a requisite traumatic childhood — he’s blinded by mysterious chemicals that give his remaining four senses a supernatural boost and then orphaned. In his youth, he’s taken under the wing of an old master and trained how to fight. He grows up to run a small law firm with a pal from college by day while roaming the streets at night handing out justice with his fists and the occasional kick or two.

To lay out the story of Daredevil is to dip into the tights and supernatural elements of the plot because that’s direct from the comic. But the other thing that sets this Daredevil apart comes from Netflix’s binge-watching model. It allows the show to be fully serialized, allowing problems to crop up and not be solved in one episode. Storylines can slowly build and focus in on supporting characters instead of just the main character, allowing fans to really explore the world and not just Daredevil himself.

For example, the main villain is only talked about, not shown or even named until the third episode — keeping him interesting and slightly otherworldly. When the audience does finally meet him, he’s soft-spoken, almost shy — the juxtaposition of his reputation with the man himself leaves the viewer wondering who he really is. This makes his inevitable eruption of violence, a truly shocking moment. Daredevil is brave and skilled but can he really stand against this guy?

Daredevil marks the first of several Marvel shows in the works with Netflix — including: A.K.A. Jessica Jones and Luke Cage. It’s a much different corner of their superhero universe — involving a focus narrowed to saving the streets of New York rather than worlds and universes. The long-term plan is to each titular superhero unite in a miniseries to be called, The Defenders.
