Fish Oil Supplements Might Negate Chemotherapy And Should Be Avoided During Treatment, Study Claims

Cancer patients taking certain fish oil supplements might risk becoming resistant to chemotherapy.

Cancer patients taking fish oil supplements might risk becoming resistant to chemotherapy while attempting to improve their health, researchers say. According to the new study, once someone has been diagnosed with cancer, food supplement-use statistically increased three-fold.

About one-in-five cancer patients take supplements with omega-3 fatty acids, according to the researchers involved in the study published in the medical journal JAMA Oncology, which also stated that most of the omega-3 supplements these patients take is in the form of fish oil supplements. According to the researchers, getting increased fatty acid by using certain fish oil supplements might actually negate chemotherapy effects and be dangerous to patients’ health.

The American Cancer Society has an informational page about the use of fish oil supplements and other omega-3 fatty acids. It states that there is mixed evidence of its health benefits relating to cancer and tumor growth, and explained that in the past, a researcher claimed to have treated cancer by using fish oil.

“In the 1950s, a German scientist named Johanna Budwig, PhD, discovered essential fatty acids and developed a diet that she said would fight cancer. Dr. Budwig claimed that many of her patients experienced tumor reduction within 3 months, and she stated that some experienced even more dramatic results. Dr. Budwig has reportedly used omega-3 fatty acids in combination with other nutrients to treat thousands of people with cancer and other diseases.”

The American Cancer Society also stated that it is not known what kind of medications that fish oil supplements might adversely affect. The new research indicates that chemotherapy medication is most likely adversely affected by the use of fish oil supplementation.

Dr. Emilie E. Voest, of the Netherlands Cancer Institute in Amsterdam, and her fellow researchers authoring the new study say that fish oil supplements contain “substantial levels of 16:4(n-3), a fatty acid with potent chemotherapy-negating effects in preclinical models, and that intake of low doses of fish oil interferes with chemotherapy activity in mice.”

The researchers had already determined that the fatty acid 16:4(n-3) as well as the fatty acid 12S-HHT induced chemotherapy resistance in mice studies, according to Medical News Today. The researchers wrote that the combination of the chemotherapy drug “with as little as 2.5 pmol of orally administered 16:4(n-3) induced virtually complete chemoresistance.”

The researchers examined commonly used omega-3 supplements and found 16:4(n-3) was in all of the fish oil supplements they tested. Similarly, when healthy volunteers ate fresh mackerel and herring, the effect was the same as what the researchers found with the fish oil supplements. Salmon had similar effects, but to a much lesser extent.

“Herein we show that fish oil contains substantial levels of 16:4(n-3), a fatty acid with potent chemotherapy-negating effects in preclinical models, and that intake of low doses of fish oil interferes with chemotherapy activity in mice.”

The researchers suggested that people should avoid taking fish oil supplements and eating herring and mackerel during the window of time spanning from the day before their chemotherapy treatment until the day after their treatment. The researchers said that this 48-hour window without the consumption of fish oil supplements, mackerel, and herring should be sufficient to avoid risking chemotherapy resistance.

IPL 2015 Cricket Opening Ceremony Live Online

Cricket fanatics can watch the splashy, Olympic-style opening ceremony for the 2015 IPL live online to catch a glimpse of India’s most glamorous event, bringing together the cricket-crazy country’s biggest stars of the sport together with the glamor of Bollywood’s most sought-after celebrities.

Details on how to watch the spectacular Indian Premier League 2015 Opening Ceremony live online from the Salt Lake Stadium in Kolkata, India, Tuesday can be found below.

The eighth edition of the Indian Premier League, the world’s most popular and lucrative T20 professional cricket tournament, starts play on Wednesday with defending champions the Kolkata Knight Riders hosting 2013 trophy-winners the Mumbai Knight Riders. The opening ceremony takes place the previous night.

The splashy ceremony, titled Festival of India, is designed specifically to appeal to a global audience, organizers say.

“The content will be in English,” said Chanda Singh, of Encompass Events, the company staging the eye-popping program. “The choreography would be Bollywood style.”

Chanda called the script for the IPL Opening Ceremony “tight and seamless.”

“The hero of the show are the floor projections through which the evolution of IPL will be narrated. It will offer a glimpse into the winning teams, the cricketers and what the league means to people. The camaraderie between cricketers of different countries while playing together in a single team will be in focus.”

An A-list of Bollywood stars — the top celebrities of India’s hugely popular domestic film industry — will be present at the ceremony alongside many of India’s top cricket players, whose celebrity in some cases exceeds that of the movie stars.

India’s most glamorous celebrity couple will be in attendance — India Test side captain Virat Kohli and his girlfriend, Bollywood star and producer Anushka Sharma.

With the tense atmosphere in India, however, security at the Opening Ceremony will be extremely tight — as it will remain for the entire seven-week Indian Premier League season.

“We have made elaborate security arraignments for IPL. Besides deploying security personnel at team hotels, more than 5,000 cops would be stationed in and around the stadium during the matches,” said Kolkata police commissioner Rajiv Mishra.

But the chief worry for the Opening Ceremony is rain, which according to local weather forecasts, could put a damper, literally, on the open-air gala.

Star Wars Digital Collection

Early in the second half of the National Championship Basketball Game, the rumored Star Wars: The Digital Collection was introduced to the world. On April 1, the Star Wars fansite Yakface ran a story claiming that a billboard at a local Walmart store advertised the Star Wars: The Digital Collection as coming soon. You can understand how hard it is to substantiate anything on April Fool’s Day.

All the rumors were laid to rest in a simple 30-second spot that ran during the first timeout of the Duke and Wisconsin game. The spot opens as Darth Vader’s helmet is locked into place at the end of Episode III: Revenge of the Sith. It then shows various scenes from all six episodes. What will have most fans excited is the collection will be available with never-before-seen bonus footage on April 10.

This will be the first time that Star Wars will be available in the digital format. The Star Wars: The Digital Collection is coming to Apple iTunes, Xbox Video, Google Play, VUDU, Amazon, Verizon, and the Disney Anywhere App. To get an idea of what to expect from the collection, VUDU has posted the collection with a partial list of extras. The retail price, according to VUDU, is $89.99.

The Star Wars: The Digital Collection is just the latest announcement from Lucasfilm in what is quickly becoming the year of Star Wars. In January, Marvel Comics released the title comic book Star Wars. They followed it with Darth Vader in February and Princess Leia in March. The addition of Kanan the Last Padawan in April gives fans of the Force a new Star Wars comic every week. The digital version of the comic is available for free with the purchase of the print version.

Star Wars news didn’t stop there. In February, a new series of over 20 books were announced to lead up to Episode VII: The Force Awakens which will be released on December 18. The news continued into March with the title to the first stand alone film Rogue One and the release date of Episode VIII moved up to May of 2017.

Throw in Star Wars Celebration in Anaheim at the end of April, and Star Wars will reach every medium this year, books, comics, movies, conventions and digital. This leads to the question of are fans getting too much Star Wars? What do you say readers? Do you have Star Wars overload, or is the Star Wars: The Digital Collection just icing on the cake?

anne hathaway lip sync battle miley cyrus

Watch out! Anne Hathaway is coming in like a wrecking ball, and she’s had everybody at the edge of their seats with her impressive performance.

In a teaser released for Spike’s brand new Tonight Show spin-off, the Les Miserables actress took the audience by surprise when she flawlessly imitated Miley Cyrus. Her act was a big shift from her usual roles, but she successfully pulled it off and delivered a performance that will definitely be talked about.

In the short video, the actress entered the stage wearing a cropped white tank top and a pair of piped athletic pants. She had her hair slicked back to resemble Cyrus’ hairstyle, but the actress did not stop there. She went into detail by wearing bright red lipstick and having her nails polished white.

She opened her performance with over-the-top dance moves like jumping on stage. Later, Hathaway loses her baggy pants and reveals her high-waisted white briefs similar to Cyrus’ in her “Wrecking Ball” music video. At this moment, the audience was going crazy, and even Emily Blunt nods her head in the background. The show’s host, LL Cool J, seemed to be having fun too as he sang along with the song.

At this point of the show, the whole stage darkened and the spot light focused on Hathaway. As she sang the chorus for “Wrecking Ball,” the actress ran to the middle of the stage, and as the whole stage lit up, she mounted a wrecking ball. While riding on the prop, Hathaway leaned back facing Blunt, and with a teasing smile, gave her the finger. The British star, who was clearly enjoying her opponent’s performance, was shown laughing at this silly gesture. Hathaway sure knows how to put on a show.

Lip Sync Battle is the brain child of actors John Krasinski and Stephen Merchant. Krasinski first challenged Tonight Show’s Jimmy Fallon back when the host was still on Late Night. The competition then gained its popularity when the host battled against both Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Merchant. The gag debuted on the Tonight Show with a lip sync battle featuring the host against Paul Rudd. Since then, the stint became so popular that it even attracted artists themselves.

Anne Hathaway and Emily Blunt will take the spotlight when their faceoff episode airs on Thursday, April 9 at 10 p.m.

Nina Dobrev Leaving ‘Vampire Diaries': Actress Quits Show After Six Seasons

Nina Dobrev leaving Vampire Diaries: Actress reportedly quits after six seasons.

Nina Dobrev is leaving The Vampire Diaries. The actress announced that she has decided not to return for Season 7 and has actually already celebrated her big goodbye with a party surrounded by her cast and crew as she officially said goodbye to Elena Gilbert.

While the show has been picked up for Season 7, Nina will not be apart of the cast, and fans are so upset by the huge hole her absence will obviously leave. How can she end up with Damon or Stefan if she’s not there? How can the series have a proper ending without its lead female character? These are the questions that the writers will have to face before the next season.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, Nina Dobrev spoke out about quitting The Vampire Diaries, but her words did little to ease the shock of her fans.

“I’ve just spent the most beautiful weekend on Lake Lanier in Georgia with my own TVD Family, the cast and crew of The Vampire Diaries. I want to be the first to tell you that it wasn’t just a holiday celebration, it was a goodbye party. I always knew I wanted Elena’s story to be a six-season adventure, and within those six years I got the journey of a lifetime. I was a human, a vampire, a doppelganger, a crazy immortal, a doppelganger pretending to be human, a human pretending to be a doppelganger. I got kidnapped, killed, resurrected, tortured, cursed, body-snatched, was dead and undead, and there’s still so much more to come before the season finale in May. Elena fell in love not once, but twice, with two epic soulmates, and I myself made some of the best friends I’ll ever know and built an extended family I will love forever.”

“There’s more to come before we wrap this up, and I promise you’ll get to hear all about my experiences over the next month as we approach the season finale (I have given an exclusive interview for the June issue of SELF Magazine that I am excited for you to see!), but until then I invite you to hop on the roller coaster ride that is Elena Gilbert’s life and join me as I celebrate her and prepare to say goodbye to her — and to my work family — as I move on to the next chapter of my life. I want to share this goodbye with all of you (this weekend’s pictures were just the beginning). You, the wonderful fandom who gave more love, support and passion than anyone could have ever imagined seven years ago, when a young Degrassi girl from Canada showed up in LA to audition for ‘thatTwilight TV show.’ ;-) I love you all. Fasten your seatbelts. If you think you know what’s coming, you don’t.”

As previously reported by the Inquisitr, Nina Dobrev and her co-star, Ian Somerhalder, had a very long romance, which ended in 2013. Somerhalder is currently engaged to actress Nikki Reed, and the couple’s presence on set has been rumored to be a source of upset for Dobrev and could be one of the reasons why she’s decided to quit the show.

E! Online reports that a big reason Dobrev decided to leaveThe Vampire Diaries is because she wants her freedom. The actress wants to be able to relax after six years of a grueling schedules, and she may also want to explore a more lucrative movie career.

One thing is for sure, Nina will be greatly missed, and the show may not be long for the small screen without her.

What are your thoughts on Nina Dobrev leaving The Vampire Diaries? Are you shocked that she quit?

It’s been said that the power of positive thinking can work miracles. Danielle Josey Davis is living proof of this. She was married only seven months when a horrible motorcycle crash left her husband, Matt Davis, on life support, in a coma. To make it worse, doctors told her that there was a 90 percent chance that he would never wake up, and that she should let him pass, according to WFIN Channel 1330.

But she refused to give up. Danielle kept him on life support and brought Matt home, and she and her mother cared for him. Then a miracle happened. Three months after the horrific motorcycle crash, Matt woke up. He said, “I’m trying.” Now, according to ABC News, he stated the following.

“I’m sure glad I married her.”

Although he doesn’t remember his wife before the crash of 2010 because of his traumatic brain injury, he has his life back. He was only 23 and Danielle 24-years-old when the accident happened, and although they had dated for only two months before their wedding, she turned out to truly be his life-line. His mother was too ill to take care of him, and his father had passed away two years before the accident. Danielle wanted Matt to have the best view while in his hospital bed at home, and she said the following to her mother, according to ABC News.

“If we’ve got to bring him home, let’s make sure he has the best view in the world. If he’s going to be a body in a bed, let’s give him something to look at.”

Danielle recalled that she knew that there was still life within Matt. He followed her and her mother with his eyes. Then, eventually, Danielle attempted to have Matt grab a small toy motorcycycle, as his rehab therapists had done. He grabbed it, three months after the accident, and she felt hopeful.

But a big breakthrough occurred when she asked what Matt wanted to eat, and Danielle stated that he replied with his favorite food, in a barely audible whisper, according to WFIN Channel 1330.

“I kid you not, he says, ‘buffalo chicken wrap from Cheddar’s.’ We all whipped around because we all knew what he said.”

Eventually, Matt entered another rehab program for two-and-a-half months, and he left the program able to walk with a walker.

Now, he even drives a stick shift car for fun, plays Scrabble, and takes yoga classes with his wife. Because he doesn’t recall their relationship before the accident, he got to know Danielle anew. They even have cute pet names for each other. After all they’ve been through, each moment of life is cherished. Danielle calls her husband “Mattie” or “cake,” and he lovingly refers to her as “baby” or “doughnut.” They even posted a Facebook page, entitled “Matt Davis Recovery,” which has over 6,000 followers, and documents his recovery.

Just as Matt values his wife, another husband, as reported in the Inquisitr, wrote an essay commending his wife for all she does, as a stay-at-home mom. The essay went viral on the internet, so the world now knows what Steve Nelms’ wife means to him.

Disney Magic Kingdom Baby Tiger

There are those that who to be eccentric and those who think they are just flat-out normal, but not everyone agrees with them. Such was the case of a guest who tried to enter the Magic Kingdom park in Walt Disney World on Monday with her pet, but she was not allowed entry. While some service animals are allowed entry, the woman could not bring in her pet because it was a baby Bengal tiger.

Yes, the unidentified woman tried to bring a baby Bengal tiger into the theme park, but Cast Members at the entrance denied her entry. After a bit or arguing, the Central Florida Zoo was called to retrieve the baby Bengal tiger until the end of the woman’s vacation.

disney world magic kingdom baby bengal tiger

According to a source close to the situation who needed to remain anonymous, the woman became extremely irate and actually started claiming that Disney was making up the “no tigers allowed” rule on the spot.

Per the Walt Disney World website, service animals are allowed in the park as long as they are on a leash and always in the control of the guest. Cast Members are not allowed to take control of the animals at any time.

On the website, it does not specifically state which animals are allowed in the parks, but it does list rules and restricted areas.

“Cast Members are not permitted to take control of service animals. Guests with service animals should follow the same attraction entrance guidelines as Guests who use wheelchairs.

“Due to the nature of some attractions, service animals may not be permitted to ride. At these locations, please ask a Cast Member about available options, including Rider Switch with a member of your party or a portable kennel.”

Upon first being told that the baby tiger was not allowed in Magic Kingdom, the female guest, who is said to have been visiting from Dubai, became extremely angry. She was speaking with Disney Guest Relations and at first would not accept the fact that she couldn’t bring the tiger into the park.

After a long time period of speaking about the tiger and reassuring her that the animal would be well treated and taken care of during her time in Walt Disney World, the woman did agree to let the animal caretakers from the Central Florida Zoo care for it.

Disney would not comment on the situation when reached this evening.

As of now, it may not be posted everywhere, but there are rules for bringing wild jungle cats and other such dangerous animals into Walt Disney World. For the woman who tried to bring a baby Bengal tiger into Magic Kingdom, she learned the hard way.

100-Year-Old Husband Hacks 88-Year-Old Wife To Death With Ax, Stabs Self To Death, Authorities Say

100 year old kills wife

Michael Juskin, a 100-year-old man, apparently murdered his wife Sunday, hacking 88-year-old Rosalia Juskin to death with an ax as she slept, according to prosecutors in Bergen County New Jersey, who say that the centenarian then went into a bathroom of the couple’s home and stabbed himself to death.

The elderly couple’s bodies were discovered on Monday in their Elmwood Park home, and now police and prosecutors are trying to figure out what drove a man who had lived 100 years to end his life and that of his wife in such violent and horrifying fashion.

Bergen County Prosecutor John L. Molinelli said that the couple had “a history of domestic issues.” According to media reports, Michael Juskin may have suffered from symptoms of dementia.

The terrible discovery came after a relative of the couple — who did not live with them — became worried and called police. When the cops went to check on the house, they found the bloody scene.

While the incident is still under investigation, Molinelli calls the killings a “likely murder-suicide” and investigators do not believe that any other individual was present during or involved in the killings.

The couple was often seen walking in their neighborhood, and Rosalia Juskin frequently tended to a garden the yard of their home, leaving neighbors shocked at the Juskins’ violent end.

“It seems to be a nice family,” one neighbor told the NJ.com news site, adding that the elderly Juskin couple often wintered in Florida, accompanied by their children.

Though Michael Juskin would be one of the oldest people ever accused or murder, the heartbreaking murder-suicide was sadly not as unusual an event among elderly couples as might be generally believed.

Bergen County, New Jersey, alone has seen two similar murder-suicides committed by men over age 80 since 2012. This weekend’s tragedy has thrown a new spotlight on the issue of domestic violence among senior citizens.

“It’s pretty obvious it’s a problem,” Elaine Meyerson, of the Center for Hope and Safety, told the news site NorthJersey.com. “The question is, how do we get to them when so many of them are housebound, to teach them about safety planning? It’s a challenge, and they shouldn’t have to suffer living in a violent home, just like a 20-year-old.”

Experts say that domestic violence killings among the elderly, such as the murder-suicide allegedly committed by 100-year-old Michael Juskin, often escape official notice because they are wrongly classified as compassionate “mercy killings.”

200-Year-Old Skeleton Found Intact At Waterloo Battle Site, Remains Identified

200 year old skeleton

The discovery of a skeleton, some 200-years-old, was found fully intact in 2012. And three years later, an archaeologist and his team have identified the victim as Friedrich Brandt, a German soldier who was killed at the Battle of Waterloo in 1815. According to Newser, the skeletal remains — nearly fully intact — are the rarest find from the skirmish over the last 200 years.

Thanks to the watchful eye of Dominique Bosquet in June of 2012, a piece of history from the bloody Waterloo battle was preserved. Furthermore, thanks to his colleague, Gareth Glover, the victim is no longer an unknown soldier.

Bosquet, an archaeologist with Belgium’s Walloon region, recognized the corpse three years ago during a dig for a new car park that was being built ahead of the battle’s 200 year anniversary. His quick thinking prevented the operator of a bulldozer from destroying the skeleton. It was found missing both hands, and the loader partially damaged the skull; otherwise, it was in remarkable condition. But how did the place of discovery come to be his final resting place? Bosquet explains.

“One possibility was that he crept away wounded from the front and settled down to die here. Another is that he was carried here by comrades.

“Again, we can only speculate about why he was apparently left behind. Perhaps comrades buried him, perhaps an explosion nearby covered him with earth.”

Using a combination of scientific dating techniques and other information, Bosquet estimated the skeleton found dated 200 years ago and was likely a young man between the age of 22 and 29. Beyond that, he couldn’t arrive at the identity. He noted a deformed spinal cord in the mortal remains.

Based on modern military standards, he would not be fit for duty in the military today. But that didn’t deter him from fighting two centuries ago. Bosquet and his team believe Brandt fought with scores of others loyal to the Duke of Wellington so that his country could be freed from occupation by the French.

Glover, a historian, former Naval officer, and Waterloo author, joined the study of the 200-year-old skeleton. With a bit of trial and error — and timing — he was able to assist with the identification of Brandt. Glover looked at the artifacts found with the fallen soldier: a flint, coins (British and French) that amounted to a month worth of salary, his uniform, and other items to close assist with a positive ID. DNA was useless; the soldier had no known living relatives. However, the turning point occurred in the investigation of the soldier’s bones and artifacts.

The historian used a piece of wood found with Brandt that had the initials “C.B.” inscribed on it. Glover then turned his attention to records of soldiers who fought at Waterloo on that fateful day. There were only three, but only one went into battle near the site where the remains were found. Of the other two, one fought in another battle away from Lion’s Mound, and the other soldier’s pay was collected at the end of the war by a fellow comrade because he perished in the line of duty.

Then, it made sense to the military historian, who realized that a “barely legible “F” rounded out the man’s name. It’s not clear what his middle name is with the “C.”

With the 200-year-old skeleton found, there are plans to put it on display to the public. The details are forthcoming. Some believe, like King Richard III, whose remains were found also in 2012, Brandt should get a proper burial.

Mindy Kaling distances herself from brother who posed as a black man to enter med school

Actress/comedienne Mindy Kaling is apparently putting some distance between herself and older brother Vijay Chokal-Ingam who claims he pretended to be African-American to gain admission to medical school.

Kaling, formerly of The Office, is the creator and star of The Mindy Project sitcom on the Fox television network.

Both siblings live in Los Angeles.

On his Almost Black website (the title of a forthcoming memoir about the medical school application process), the self-described hard-partying college frat boy admits that he wanted to become a doctor even though he lacked the top grades and test scores which were a prerequisite for the extremely competitive field. He ultimately decided to apply by identifying his race as black on the 1999 AMCAS application because in his words “I knew that admission standards for certain minorities under affirmative action were, let’s say… less stringent?”

To implement his plan, Chokal-Ingam, among other things, altered his appearance by shaving his head and started going by Jojo, his seldom-used middle name, rather than Vijay.

Ingam, who received his undergraduate degree from the University of Chicago, maintains that he subsequently interviewed at 11 prestigious U.S. medical schools and was ultimately admitted to the St. Louis University School of Medicine (it’s not clear if any other school accepted him).

He dropped out after two years, however, and later went on to earn an MBA from UCLA.

Chokal-Ingam has become an outspoken foe of race-based affirmative action which he considers a form of legalized racism.

“I got into medical school because I said I was black. The funny thing is I’m not… My plan actually worked. Lucky for you, I never became a doctor,” the website summarizes.

On Facebook, Vijay Chokal-Ingam, 38, writes that “Let me clear about one thing. I never lied about anything on my application, except my race. Everything else on my application can be verified as correct. I didn’t even claim that I was ‘disadvantaged.'”

Mindy Kaling has yet to comment on her popular Twitter feed about the controversy or the subsequent social media blowback. A rep for the star told the New York Daily News and other media outlets, however, that “Mindy has been estranged from her brother for years. She was not aware of his decision to apply to medical school under a different name and race.”

A couple of days ago, Chokal-Ingam told the New York Post that “I love my sister to death.” As far as the revelation about gaming the medical school system when he was a younger man, “she says this will bring shame on the family,” he admitted. On the Almost Black website, he added that “The rest of my family does not agree with the book. Still, they respect my right to make my own decisions with my career.”

SC Officer's Murder Charge Proves Michael Slager Lied About Why He Shot Walter Scott? [Video]

A South Carolina police officer’s murder charge provided as evidence a video of officer Michael Slager shooting Walter Scott, an unarmed black man, eight times in the back. But before this video appeared the police department and Slager’s attorney had created a story which blamed Scott for the shooting.

In a related report by the Inquisitr, the video that led to the South Carolina officer’s murder charges shows Scott running away from Slager. “The officer discharged his weapon eight times in Scott’s direction, hitting him four times in the back and once in the ear. Two of those shots proved to be fatal.” When the family of Scott saw the video (which can be seen in higher resolution on Vimeo), they held a press conference.

Based upon reports, for at least two days, police officer Michael Slager was unaware the video of the shooting even existed until an anonymous bystander provided it as evidence. The Post and Courier reported the initial story where Slager gave his account of what supposedly happened.

“A statement released by North Charleston police spokesman Spencer Pryor said a man ran on foot from the traffic stop and an officer deployed his department-issued Taser in an attempt to stop him. That did not work, police said, and an altercation ensued as the men struggled over the device. Police allege that during the struggle the man gained control of the Taser and attempted to use it against the officer. The officer then resorted to his service weapon and shot him, police alleged.”

Then, on Monday, Slager had his lawyer, David Aylor, release a statement where he claimed he properly followed all the standard police procedures before resorting to using his gun.

“When confronted, Officer Slager reached for his Taser — as trained by the department — and then a struggle ensued,” Aylor said. “The driver tried to overpower Officer Slager in an effort to take his Taser…. [Slager] felt threatened and reached for his department-issued firearm and fired his weapon.”

Unfortunately, the video does not show what happened directly before the shooting. The bystander did not begin recording until a moment before Walter Scott attempted to run away, but it does clearly show Slager shooting Scott in the back.

Already, Michael Scott’s death is being compared to that of Eric Garner and Michael Brown. The Daily Beast also notes the video seemingly shows Michael Slager planting evidence in order to provide a cover for his story.

“After Scott is cuffed, Slager jogs back to where his Taser lies in the dirt, picks it up, carries it over, and drops it next to Scott’s body. This apparent planting of a weapon on Scott is exactly what many blacks say, without evidence, happens after one of their own is killed by a cop.”

Based upon the video evidence, North Charleston Mayor Keith Summey says the SC officer’s murder charges are entirely appropriate, saying, “When you make a bad decision, don’t care if you’re behind the shield or a citizen on the street, you have to live with that decision.”

However, Brooklyn wasn’t the only Easter bunny in the Lachey family. Her dad Nick also sported an Easter bunny costume and shared his snap on Instagram. He captioned his photo with a greeting, “Happy Easter to all!” and used the hashtag #SillyRabbit.

Brooklyn joined the Lachey family last January 5. At first, the couple’s two-year-old son, Camden John, was a little skeptical about sharing the spotlight with his little sister. But according to Nick, he is already getting used to being a big brother.

“He’s very protective. Like if Brooklyn’s crying, Camden wants to make sure he lets us know that she’s crying and he wants to know why,” he told E!Online.

“I like that he’s kind of getting his protective big brother instincts going already. That’s a good thing.”

Camden also had a hand at announcing the arrival of his baby sister. When Vanessa was still expecting, Nick posted a photo of their son running in the sand. Next to him are scrawled the words, “It’s a girl.” The announcement, which was uploaded on Instagram, was captioned, “Can’t think of a better way to celebrate 3 years of marriage to my beautiful @VanessaLachey than this #family.”

Vanessa also took to her own website to welcome their little girl to the world.

“I have been dreaming of this moment for as long as I can remember, the day I was going to meet my little girl. A friend recently told me how magical today was going to be because it’s the day I would meet my best friend.”

Vanessa has been married to the former 98 Degrees singer since 2011.

GWAR Sued: Metal Band Speaks Out On Theft Accusations

GWAR on stage in 2007.

GWAR has been sued by the father of Dave Brockie, who was the front man of the band up until his death in 2014. According to NBC News, William Brockie has sued the surviving members. His lawsuit was filed on Thursday, and the court documents reveal many shocking claims against the remaining band members. Brockie is suing the band for $1 million, plus punitive damages.

Dave Brockie died of a heroin overdose on March 23, 2014. After his death, William Brockie claims that the band not only tried to use Dave Brockie’s image and name to make money, he also has accused the band of theft.

“The suit accuses the band of failing to pay Brockie’s estate what it was owed for its last tour with Brockie in February and March 2014; stealing his bass guitars, artwork and other personal effects, including a gold record; and trying to take control of Brockie’s estate from his father.”

That is not all William Brockie has accused the surviving members of GWAR of stealing. The man has also accused the band of taking his son’s ashes. The lawsuit revealed how that occurred.

“Eventually, a staff member turned over ‘a small fraction of his son’s ashes which were delivered in a used plastic bag with Discover credit card logo on it,’ the suit says.”

GWAR was initially silent about the lawsuit, but they have now released their own lengthy statement defending the band against the accusations made by William Brockie. Loudwire shared that statement in full. The statement was shared on the band’s Facebook on Tuesday.

“We have not yet seen the actual lawsuit papers, and thus cannot comment on the substance of the lawsuit brought against GWAR by Dave Brockie’s father, William Brockie, but we can say that the claims in the Style Weekly article are false. We did not steal Dave Brockie’s ashes, or anything else that belonged to him. In fact, all of the items mentioned in the article, including Dave’s ashes have been available to his attorneys for weeks. At all times, and under very trying circumstances, we have acted in good faith to honor the wishes of our dear friend. Dave left no will or instructions for final arrangements, and so we have done the best we could to honor what we believe Dave Brockie would have wanted.

“The accusation concerning Dave’s ashes is particularly troubling for us. Following Dave’s passing, the first thing we did was notify his father, who signed over Dave’s body so we could have him cremated. We were told by Dave’s father that he did not want to be involved in making Dave’s final arrangements. For this reason, Slave Pit assumed that responsibility, paying for his cremation, arranging two memorial services (one public and one private), and purchasing a plot for Dave in Richmond’s famed Hollywood Cemetery. Dave’s father did not attend either of the services held for his son in Richmond.

“Over 30 years of working and living with Dave, several of us had heard him say that he wished for his ashes to be kept at Slave Pit, so he could ‘keep an eye on GWAR’ while we worked. In the weeks following his death, we developed a plan for a memorial fund that would raise money to honor Dave’s memory with a statue in Hollywood Cemetery and work to continue his passionate support of the arts. We felt strongly that a portion of his remains should live at the site of his proposed monument in Hollywood Cemetery. When William Brockie later approached us, we released a portion of the ashes at his request, so he could spread them in the location where Dave’s brother and mother’s ashes were dispersed.

“Concerning the other allegations in the article, there was certainly no effort on the part of anyone in GWAR, including drummer Brad Roberts, to steal or hide Dave’s belongings and personal effects either from his home or office. Dave, like the rest of GWAR, was paid upfront for his final leg of touring with GWAR. The claim that we failed to pay his share of royalties from Slave Pit Inc. is false, and we have the records to prove that. We have been in correspondence with William Brockie and his lawyers for months. They have access to the band’s financial records, and Dave’s payments and share of royalties are clearly recorded. Likewise, William Brockie’s attorneys have an itemized list of the small collection of Dave’s art and belongings at Slave Pit. There was never an attempt on the part of Slave Pit to withhold these items from William Brockie. When his attorneys finally identified the particular things they wanted, we made arrangements to return them immediately. Dave’s remains, as well as his belongings, including the instruments and the gold record mentioned in the article were given to our lawyers, who in turn notified the Brockie estate that they could retrieve them weeks ago.”

Dave Brockie was the front man of GWAR for 30 years, and fans of the group loved him. Since his death, fans have started a petition to have his likeness of his stage character, Oderus Urungus, included in Mortal Kombat X.

In February, the petition had over 25,000 signatures, according to Tech Times. At this time of this article, that number has jumped to 29,000. The petition shares why Brockie’s character should be included in the game.

“Oderus was as hilarious as he was viscous, and also one of the most colorful and creative characters not only in rock history, but also history in general. Though his music will live on, what better way would there be to further immortalize (toasty) Oderus Urungus then to have him be a playable character on Mortal Kombat X.”

Mortal Kombat X is set for release this month, and there is no word on the inclusion of Brockie’s stage persona in the game.

Brockie’s death has not stopped the band from performing. According to Mail Online, GWAR released an album last year, and they recently wrapped up tour dates in Japan and Australia.

The band will celebrate their 30th anniversary with a 2015 GWAR-B-Q. The event will be held in the band’s birthplace of Richmond, Virginia, in August, according to Loudwire.

However, GWAR fans will have the chance to see them in Arizona later this month. The band will perform at the Nile Theater in Mesa, Arizona, on April 18. The performance will be a special event to celebrate National Record Store Day. The band will perform under the RAWG, and they plan to release new material as well, according to MXDWN.com.

Fans of GWAR have expressed their feelings about the lawsuit against the band on social media. Some fans have even showed the metal band support if the allegations against them are true. The band has made it clear in their statement that the accusations are not true.

GWAR plans to continue to entertain their fans. They have dealt with the loss of Oderus Urungus in their stage shows, and they have added new singers as well. The band has no plans to stop with their music.

Cop Punches Pregnant Woman

A home surveillance system captured video footage of a Texas police officer punching a heavily pregnant Iraq war veteran for “resisting arrest” as a CPS worker attempted to remove her 18-month old child from her care. Deanna Robinson, who is 38 weeks pregnant, says that the cop punched her three or four times in the back as her stomach pounded against the kitchen cabinet. She was then placed in jail for six days based on charges of resisting arrest, interfering with child custody and assaulting an officer.

The video, which Deanna Robinson uploaded to Youtube shows a 30-second clip captured by her parent’s home surveillance security system on the day of her arrest. The video clearly shows the officer raising his fist and punching the woman in the back as she lay against a cabinet. His fist raises again and the video cuts out. Robinson notes that her parent’s video system only records in 30-second intervals. Therefore, the entire scene was not captured; however, she has the first blow on camera as well as photographs of injuries sustained from the attack.

The Daily Mail reports that the police came to the home of Robinson’s parents to take custody of her 18-month-old child after an altercation with her husband. She said the abuse and neglect charges were reported by her stepson who has cerebral palsy and is in a wheelchair. He reported an argument between Robinson and her husband to his teacher who then called CPS.

Robinson says after the argument, she went to her parent’s home but a CPS agent called to say they wanted to speak with her about the incident. Instead of speaking, Robinson says they came with papers to remove the child. She says she did not want them to take her toddler so she stepped between the CPS worker and her son and said, “No, you’re not touching my kid.” At this point, the altercation began as the two large police officers pushed the 38-week-pregnant Robinson against the kitchen counter and allegedly punched her at least three times.

“I’m 38 weeks pregnant, and with my stomach again repeatedly pressed into that counter, and with my 18-month old son watching his mother be assaulted, and him screaming in fear.”

Robinson says the resisting arrest and assaulting an officer charges are unfounded as she could not have assaulted the officer since she was heavily pregnant and handcuffed. When the officer raised his fist and punched the pregnant woman, she was handcuffed while being held against a kitchen cabinet by two police officers.

Robinson is also a decorated Iraq war veteran. She received the Air Force’s highest honor, the Airman’s Medal, after helping drag several soldiers from a burning plane in Iraq.

The Hunt County Sheriff’s Office claims that they are investigating the issue and will determine if a violation of policy took place. Photos of the injuries sustained by Robinson can be viewed here.

What charges do you think the police officer should face for punching the pregnant woman?

Mischa Barton Sues Her Mother, Alleges A History Of Exploitation

Mischa Barton at the Variety And Formula E Hollywood Gala

Nuala Barton has had a suit filed against her in Los Angeles Superior Court by her daughter, Mischa Barton, in which the younger Barton lays claims that Nuala withheld earnings and exploited Mischa Barton’s fame for her own financial gain.

“This action arises from the tragic tale of a greedy stage mother posing as a talent manager who, instead of acting in the best interest of her daughter/client, schemed to defraud her unsuspecting victim.”

Mischa seeks unspecified damages. Instead, the actress is seeking to be compensated equivalent to triple the amount that the Los Angeles Superior Court finds has been withheld by Nuala Barton. The complaint lists a series of five counts, including breach of fiduciary duty, breach of oral contract, and conversion. Theft by conversion is committed when one person knowingly uses the property or rights of another person without his or her consent or knowledge for their own financial gain.

Mischa Barton makes claims that, in spite of having “absolutely no experience or training” in the management of talent, Nuala organized an elaborate scheme to keep control of her finances and to limit Mischa’s access to her earnings on an infrequent and random basis.

The complaint further alleges that Mischa’s mother induced her to purchase a $7.8 million home and that Nuala Barton set up the details of the sale in a way that would list her as co-owner of the property.

“Nuala and Barton’s father currently reside comfortably in the $7.8 million home. Barton is not welcome at the property,” asserts the complaint.

When Ms. Barton took on a role in the horror film The Hoarder, Nuala Barton allegedly deceived Mischa about the exact compensation, so that she could retain the difference in addition to the “management fee,” which the elder Barton was already charging.

“Nuala currently refuses to provide Barton with any of the funds she earned (and continues to earn in the form of residual payments) for her acting, modeling and endorsement services,” reads the complaint. “These revelations of exploitation and fraud, coupled with ongoing instances of bullying and verbal abuse, eventually led to the breakdown of Barton and Nuala’s personal and professional relationship.”

While Mischa Barton pursues compensation and justice through the courts, she has since moved on to sign with a more reputable talent agency.

Nuala Barton is represented by Lawrence Ecoff of Ecoff Landsberg and Mr. Ecoff states that he has yet to receive a copy of the complaint. Both Mr. Ecoff and Nuala declined to comment.

Torrey Ward Final Tweet

Illinois State University associate coach Torrey Ward made a tragic last post to his Twitter account just before his untimely death. Ward, along with six others, perished in a horrific plane crash after leaving the NCAA championship game in the Cessna aircraft.

Ward’s last tweet showed a picture of a private plane, appearing to be a different one than the man would later die in that night, with a caption noting that his “ride to the game wasn’t bad.” He posted a photo of the plane and photos from the big event. However, Ward had no idea that his method of transportation to the big game would also end his life.

The Cessna 414 was carrying Ward and six others from the championship game after a party when it crashed shortly after midnight on Tuesday. All seven passengers on the plane were pronounced dead at the scene. The Daily Mail reports that the other passengers on the plane were Illinois State Deputy director of athletics for external affairs, Aaron Leetch, a meat processing owner Scott Bittner, bar owner Terry Stralow, Wells Fargo employee Jason Jones, Sprint regional representative Andy Butler, and pilot Tom Hileman.

The Director of Athletics at Illinois State says that both Ward and Leetch will be deeply missed and will do all in their power to honor their legacies.

“The Redbird family and the Bloomington-Normal community has suffered a terrible loss today. Aaron Leetch was a shining star in this business. He had a gift in dealing with people and building relationships. Our external units were making incredible progress under his leadership, and he was on that trip doing what he does best.

“Torrey Ward was a big part of the success taking place with our men’s basketball program. He had a big personality, was a talented coach and recruiter, and our fans loved him.

“Our hearts go out to the families and loved ones of those involved. There is no play in the playbook for times like these. We will miss Aaron and Torrey deeply, and we will support their families in any way that we can. To honor their individual and collective legacies, we will move the Redbirds and our community forward.”

Hooters Waitress Fired, Told ‘Black People Don’t Have Blonde Hair,’ Awarded $250,000

Woman wins lawsuit against Hooters for discrimination due to hair color.

An arbitrator awarded an ex-Hooters waitress $250,000 in lost wages and attorney compensation after she was allegedly fired for having blond highlights in her hair. Hooters denies the allegations and says many African-American women have worked at the chain of restaurants while having various shades of hair, including blonde, without any difficulty whatsoever.

Farryn Johnson, who is African-American, was fired from her Baltimore restaurant job in August, 2013, because “Hooters prohibits African-American Hooters Girls from wearing blond highlights in their hair because it is not a natural color for African-Americans,” as the lawsuit claimed. Johnson claimed that racial discrimination was the root cause of the discriminatory practice that allowed white women to bleach their hair blonde, but not black women.

Johnson had worked at the restaurant for a little over a year when a manager approached her about her hair’s highlights, she said.

“The manager at the time literally said, ‘You can’t have blond because black people don’t have blond hair.’ I was shocked.”

Johnson opted to keep her blonde locks, but soon noticed that her hours were being slashed and shifts cut, and she received several written warnings about her hair, until she was ultimately fired from the Baltimore location in August, 2013.

Johnson sued for discrimination, and last Thursday and arbitrator awarded her $250,000 for lost wages and attorney fees. Arbitrator Edmund D. Cooke, Jr. stated that Hooters violated state and federal civil rights laws, and that the hair policy “was implemented in a discriminatory manner adversely affecting African-American women.” Women of other ethnicities were allowed to dye and highlight their hair. Of interest, it is not scientifically factual that black women never have blond hair. It happens in people of Aboriginal descent, as well as African descent occasionally.

Hooters, which is a restaurant known for having attractive waitresses who are scantily dressed, and many with large breasts, does not seem to be an establishment that would be concerned with women looking “natural.” Most women who are hired conform to the media’s idea of beauty — youthful, slim figures, but nothing that would require a woman to look “natural.”

Hooters denies the suggestion of racial discrimination in a detailed response on their website to the arbitrator’s decision and says no woman of any ethnicity has been told how to wear or color her hair.

Ericka Whitaker, who is a senior branch manager of Hooters of America, said in the statement that as an African-American female, she has never been told that highlights were not acceptable.

“As a former Hooters Girl who happens to be African-American, I, like countless other African-American Hooters Girls today, regularly wore my hair in various shades of blond, or any other color consistent with our ‘girl next door’ image.”

Hooters also says that only about $11,000 would be compensatory to Johnson’s lost wages, with the rest going to legal fees.

Andrew Levy, Johnson’s attorney, said that his client was very happy with the arbitrator’s decision, and is pleased that perhaps this will not happen again to another woman.

“I hope that Hooters sees this as an opportunity to make improvements in the way they train their managers and the way they deal with their employees.”

Jill Duggar Reveals ‘Not Everything Went As Expected’ With New Baby With Derick Dillard

Jill Duggar Dillard and husband Derick Dillard welcomed their long-awaited new bundle of joy, Israel David, on April 6. The baby was delivered more than a week past his due date, according to the New York Post. The baby boy weighed a healthy nine pounds, 10 ounces, and measured 23 inches long.

But not everything went as planned, according to Jill. She didn’t explain what she meant when she said this, and speculation is that she was not able to have the home birth that the couple planned, according to E!

Nothing was confirmed, but a source told E! News that if Jill needed labor to be induced, that would require being in a hospital. The source also noted that for a birth after 42 weeks would need a doctor’s permission if labor was to occur at home with a midwife in attendance. According to E!, Jill stated the following.

“Not everything went as expected. So we were reminded of the verse that the Bible talks about when ‘Man plans his way but the Lord directs his steps.’ We were encouraged by that. He’s just a handsome little fella and we’d like everybody to stay tuned to TLC. May fifth, they’re going to be showing the birth episode as well as things surrounding that.”

So it looks like we’ll have to stay tuned and watch 19 Kids and Counting to find out specifically what went awry. But at least Jill and Derick’s Baby Dilly is said to be healthy and well-loved. And Jim Bob and Michelle seem to be beyond thrilled with the new addition to their ever-growing clan. In Michelle’s Blog, she exclaimed their joy as follows.

“Yeah!!! Our sweet new grandson, Israel David Dillard is here. We love him so much already and we love his name! Our Jill is doing wonderful and Derick seems to have a permanent smile on his face now! Israel is precious and his arrival is just another reminder of how very precious life is and how every child is a gift from God. We are happy grandparents!”

And where did the baby’s name come from? According to an article in the Inquisitr, the Duggar family is somewhat obsessed with Israel, most likely because of its connection to the Bible. Derick purchased Jill’s engagement ring in Israel, and Jill fell in love with the country when her family visited in 2011. As far as names are concerned, Jill also doesn’t intend to follow her family’s tradition of naming all their kids with the same first letter.

Autism Advocate Says Supporting Neurodiversity And Finding A Cure Are Not Conflicting Ideals

Do supporters of neurodiversity oppose finding a cure for autism?

Autism advocate Manoj Kanagaraj says that some autistic people who support neurodiversity think he is the enemy, because he hopes to help find a cure for Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Manoj says that many people in the autism community feel that supporting neurodiversity and supporting further research that aims to uncover the roots of the disorder are mutually exclusive ideals. He says that six years ago his cousin was diagnosed with autism and that the child is “now an 8-year-old boy tormented by seizures and arm biting,” and stated in a Washington Post article that his cousin was the inspiration for his involvement in autism advocacy.

Kanagaraj is a biology and computer science major at Duke University and has worked inside of an autism genetics lab. He also helps manage a social program for autistic youth. He says that some people in the autistic community say that it is impossible “to be both an advocate for autistic people and an advocate for autism research.” A recent Newsweek article also addressed the issue of neurodiversity within the autism community in a piece entitled, “The Debate Over an Autism Cure Turns Hostile.”

“The neurodiversity movement began in the 1990s, gaining ground through social media, largely around discussions of autism. Proponents liken their stance to the struggle for acceptance of ethnic minorities, and for equality in gender and sexual orientation. There was a time, they point out, when the medical community considered homosexuality to be a mental disorder. What if people on the autism spectrum were accepted for their differences, rather than pathologized?”

Manoj claims that those in support of celebrating neurodiversity are against finding a cure for the disorder. Ari Ne’eman, founder of the Autistic Self Advocacy Network (ASAN), according to Autism Digest, has been “instrumental in challenging the prevailing notion that autism needs to be cured.” Manoj says that many people involved with the neurodiversity movement feel that genetic research that looks to cure autism demeans autistic people.

“There is some legitimacy to these concerns. It’s difficult to justify concentrating limited funding on causation studies –- which can take decades to yield tangible benefits –- when there are millions of autistic adolescents and adults who need access to more services to improve their lives, including better education opportunities, employment assistance and in-home care. At the same time, blanket condemnations of genetics research are unfair. There is common ground where research on autism’s causes can be reconciled with the concept of neurodiversity and acceptance of autistic people.”

Kanagaraj refers back to his cousin and points out that ASD covers a monumentally varied spectrum. He points out that some people, like his cousin, sincerely suffer from intellectual disabilities, seizures, and physical pain in association with their autism and asserts that by “categorically opposing research into the causes of autism, neurodiversity advocates are not recognizing the needs of all autistic people.”

“According to them, a culture of acceptance and respect for autistic people may help reduce the anxiety and stress of living with the disorder. But even if these types of social programs are widely adopted and embraced, without biomedical research efforts, the suffering of autistic people is likely to remain. A world free of the bullying of autistic youth would be a wonderful thing, to be sure, but it would not relieve my cousin’s seizures or self-injurious behaviors.”

What do you think? Is Manoj Kanagaraj correct? Is there is “a false dichotomy in the autism world” that leads us to believe that we have to choose between neurodiveristy celebration and medical research into finding a cure for those who suffer from ASD, or are these ideals at odds?

Nintendo Open To Third Party ‘Smash Bros’ Fighter

Smash Bros Fighter Ballot

Super Smash Bros. Wii U seems to be the game that keeps on giving. Nintendo’s brawler has quickly become one of the hottest selling games on the Wii U console. To date, almost 3.5 million units have been sold. If you add in another 6.5 million units of Super Smash Bros. 3DS, it is easy to see that the Super Smash Bros. series is the cash cow of this generation of consoles and handhelds for Nintendo.

With numbers like this, it would be real easy for Nintendo to start developing the next game in the series. However, the latest Nintendo Direct from April 1 gave fans of the Smash series something to cheer about. It was announced that the characters of Lucas from the EarthBound series and Mewtwo from the Pokemon series would be joining the 37 fighters later this year. Lost in reports was an additional fighter that would be chosen by the fans.

Immediately following the presentation, Nintendo opened the Super Smash Bros. Fighter Ballot site. Fans have the opportunity to choose a fighter they would like to see as DLC for Smash Bros. The fan is also given the chance to state their case for why they feel the character they are submitting should be in the game.

Naturally, most fans instantly started thinking of characters owned by Nintendo they might like to see as the next Smash fighter. With Sega’s Sonic or Namco’s Pac-Man already in Super Smash Bros., there is a possibility we may see a Knuckles or Amy Rose. This brings us to a tweet by Microsoft Studios’ boss Phil Spencer answering a fan’s question.

Banjo in Super Smash Bros. would be most fans dream come true. Since the sale of Rare to Microsoft in 2002, Banjo has been absent from all Nintendo consoles and handhelds. It seems ludicrous for fans to get their hopes up, right? According to a fan over at My Nintendo News, Nintendo had this to say after a fan asked about third party characters.

Thanks for writing to us. I can certainly understand your interest in if third-party characters are eligible for the Smash Bros. Fighter Ballot. I want to assure you that you are able to submit any video-game character for this ballot. While we are unable to guarantee your suggested character will become a Super Smash Bros. Fighter, rest assured, we do take all feedback into consideration.

It has to be noted that the Super Smash Bros. Fighting Ballot is just a site where fans can suggest characters. It never states votes will be tallied, and the character with the most votes is the winner. There is a real possibility the secret fighter will be one from Nintendo’s stable of games.

Tell me gamers. Which character third party character would you like to see added to Smash Bros.?
