James Cameron became the third person in history to travel seven miles deep into the Marian Trench on Monday but his trip was cut short because of a leaky vessel.

Cameron was expected to cruise around the deepest part of the world’s oceans for six hours however hydraulic fluid started leaking in his submersible and he was forced to return to the surface after three hours.

The director of Avatar was expected to capture footage from the bottom of the Mariana Trench using a high definition camera, footage that would later be used to produce a documentary film.

Speaking of what he saw at the bottom of the trench Cameron noted:

“I didn’t see a fish … I didn’t find anything that looked alive to me, other than a few amphipods in the water.”

James continued:

“I didn’t feel like I got to a place where I could take interesting geology samples or found anything interesting biologically.”

While the trip to the bottom of the ocean took 156 minutes to complete the return trip to the surface lasted just 70 minutes after Cameron spotted the leak.

According to the Hollywood director the “port got coated” with oil and he eventually lost control of the starboard side of the sub.

While his first dive may not have yielded any new discoveries he made it sound like he’ll go back down again, telling reporters: ”

“Next dive. I gotta leave something for the next one.”

Hopefully during his next time he finds some magical sea creatures, I’m personally looking forward to the documentary he’s suppose to release from deep within the Mariana Trench.
