A circus tiger briefly escaped its cage at the Isis Shrine Circus this weekend. But don’t worry: The tiger was found in the bathroom by an unsuspecting woman.
Jenna Krehbiel said that she got up from her seat shortly after the tiger’s performance at the Isis Shrine Circus to use the bathroom. She was unaware that the bathroom was already occupied.
Krehbiel said: “I didn’t know it was in the bathroom, and I walked in the (open) door, which closed right after I had walked in. I saw the tiger; it was at most two feet in front of me, and I turned around calmly and walked back toward the door … It was the closest I have ever been to a tiger not in a cage. You don’t expect to go in a bathroom door, have it shut behind you and see a tiger walking toward you.”
According to the Salina Journal, the tiger weighed about 250 pounds.
Chris Bird, the manager at the Bicentennial Center, said that the tiger escaped shortly after a performance. Circus workers created a barricade after the animal founds its way into the woman’s bathroom. Kriehbel went into the bathroom around the same time at the opposite entrance.
Bird said: “Once she saw the tiger, I’m sure she knew to go the other way … Overall, it was a scary, surreal moment. I am glad no one was hurt or injured.”
It may have been a scary moment for Krehbiel, but the Kansas woman said that not everyone was too concerned about her safety. Her daughter, for one, only wanted to know if the tiger had washed its hands.
Krehbiel said: “My daughter wanted to know if it had washed its hands … That was her only concern. I think that shows the thoughts of children and that they wouldn’t have known there was danger.”
A video of the incident is not available but here’s a recreation of the scene from The Hangover.
Circus workers were able to get the tiger back to its enclosure shortly after it was found in the bathroom.
